"Out of the Storm" is a short story, a Christian romance set in 1854. It's set five years before the start of "Love Unexpected," which appears to be about different characters but with events happening at the same lighthouse. The hero is injured in a wreck and the heroine tends to him as he heals. It's a nice story about both the hero and heroine becoming better people for having known each other.

The Christian element is learning to have hope and live life even when the future looks lifeless. There was no bad language or sex. Overall, I'd recommend this enjoyable story, and it made me interested in the novel.

Out of the storm is a short novella by Jody Hedlund. It is the story of strength and courage in the face of certain calamity. It was also a simple love story.

Isabelle Thornton has lived all her life with her parent on a remote island, keeping the lighthouse functioning. She is content with her life until one morning after a particularly nasty storm they rescues a young man who seems to be the sole survivor of a shipwreck.

Isabelle is instantly intrigued by Henry, and Henry it seems is equally smitten.

Because of the words that that author used to describe Henry behavior, (Henry whined or Henry pouted) he annoyed me to no end for the first fifty pages or so. He seemed more like a teenager who was absorbed on what he wanted rather than a young man in his early twenties. It was more toward the middle that Henry seems to man up and begin to focus on Isabelle as a young woman he wants to win.

Isabelle was a woman of her time. She dreamed of love and a life with the man of her dreams. I liked her. She was simple and honest and upfront with Henry about what she wanted. She didnt have any secrets. That was a refreshing change.

I had to constantly remind myself that because this is a novella there isnt much room for character or plot development so it is unfair to try to compare it to a regular book. The ending was bitter sweet not at all what I was expecting.

Overall it was a nice way to pass a couple of hours.

As someone who has always been fascinated by the seemingly romantic, sacrificial, tedious, and adventurous nature of the job of a lighthouse keeper, the setting and basis of this story was what appealed to me the most at first. Having never experienced Jody Hedlund's writing before, I also thought it presented a great opportunity to find out what kind of author she was. Writing a novella an undertaking that holds rather unique challenges, within two paragraphs, my anticipation proved to be well-founded as I was swept away into a story rife with tension, humor, and passion, brought to life by entertaining, likable characters. The contrast between Isabelle and Henry's personalities and personal journeys was interesting to watch unfold, the development of their friendship and love natural and believable. I finished this story thoroughly satisfied and impressed, and am eager to read more from Miss Hedlund.

This novella was such a tease! I read it in less than an hour and loved it. I fell in love with the characters. Isabelle is a kind, caring, innocent young woman. Henry is an incessant flirt, with a good heart. The story is excellently executed, even in the short amount of pages. Even in such a short story, the author provides an excellent message: don't let your circumstances define your life and who you are. Let the Lord of love and mercy guide you and your life will always be full. I can't wait to read the installment, which is a full length novel, in this series.
