Publisher's Description

Rollicking New Release from Humorous Historical Romance Author Jen Turano

Miss Gertrude Cadwalader hoped her position as the paid companion to Mrs. Davenport would be easy. But as she becomes acquainted with her employer, she realizes the wealthy Mrs. Davenport has a strange tendency to be a bit light-fingered with other people's trinkets. Gertrude is relieved when Mrs. Davenport decides to have a quiet summer away from the social scene--until the woman changes her mind in order to help a young socialite launch into society.

When Gertrude is caught in the act of trying to return one of the trinkets by Mrs. Sinclair, the mother of shipping magnate Harrison Sinclair, the woman jumps to an unfortunate conclusion. Harrison is determined to mend fences with Miss Cadwalader, but he's unprepared for the escapades a friendship with her will entail.

"Out of the Ordinary (Apart from the Crowd Book #2)" by Jen Turano

Gertrude Cadwalader is employed by Mrs. Davenport as a companion, but she is so much more: model of Mrs. Davenports strange hair and clothing designs and returner of stolen goods. Mrs. Davenport is not a thief, not really, as she doesnt keep the things she steals, but tasks Gertrude with returning them. This setup works pretty well until Mrs. Davenport swipes some things during a party on board the Sinclair yacht. Later, Gertrude is caught by the Sinclair matriarch while trying to return those items. Things become a bit tricky as Gertrude is friends with the Sinclair heir, Harrison, who happens to be quite handsome.

I loved the setting of the yacht and the part of the story that takes place on it.

I also loved the theme of God doesnt expect His children to live ordinary lives, but extraordinary ones. Such a great reminder to hand your life over to God, trusting Him to lead the way to the path of extraordinary.

I wont lie, I would have loved a bit more of Mrs. Davenport and her mystery. It played such a small part in the story and unfolded rather quickly.

Also, I was surprised to find this is the second book in the series as the print copy had no number on the cover, spine or cover page (it did say Apart From the Crowd).

This is my first Jen Turano book, but it wont be my last. She is an excellent Christian Fiction writer and the book was first-rate.

I recently had the opportunity to read Out of the Ordinary by Jen Turano. Unfortunately, for me, this book was ordinary to the extent that I could not finish it. If you recall my review of the first book in this series, Behind the Scenes, I had quite a few objections to the style of the narrative (a.k.a. stream of consciousness and endless rambling). Such was the case with this next installment in the series. Perhaps, the me from ten years ago would have stuck through it to see how things turned out, but I seem to have lost my patience for such things. As a result, I would recommend any potential readers pass this novel (and if Im completely honest, this series) by. Maybe in her next series, Jen Turano will have found her voice once more.

I received this novel from the publisher, but was in no way required to leave a positive review. All opinions are my own.

Out of the Ordinary is a Gilded Age romance unlike any other! Humor and wit abound as the charming cast of characters, with their eccentricities and their antics, dance across the page. Delightfully entertaining from beginning to end, I relished the charming blend of mystery and romance in Gertrude's and Harrison's story. While Out of the Ordinary is lighthearted fare, it also delivers a heartfelt message. I love Turano's tales and can't wait for more!

I received a complimentary copy of this book. No review was required, and all thoughts expressed are my own.

It's hard for me to say that I have a favorite of all these characters, since I absolutely love them all. But Gertrude and Harrison have a very special place in my heart! Harrison with his color blindness and heart of gold and Gertie with her selfless kindness, plus throw back in all of my favorite characters from the first book, including quirky Mrs. Davenport, and the fabulously entertaining Huxley sisters, and you've got a fantastic read! AND there's new characters to love to boot! Harrison's sisters are so uniquely entertaining they are, in my humble opinion, clamoring for their own stories! ;) Temperance also is seen emerging into a whole new character as the pages turn, leaving me in sweet anticipation for the third in this lovely series! Jen wraps everything up nicely with all of her characters, which I was SO happy about! I love the Faith messages, Love the touches of mystery, and OH THE HUMOR! I laughed SO hard it hurt! Truly I almost fell out of bed! There are SO many things I can tell you about this book, but since I don't want to give anything away I'll only say that I HIGHLY recommend Out of the Ordinary and dub it a MUST READ! Jen has done it again!

Gertrude has the difficult job of being the paid companion to one of the most difficult women in town. She has been turned orange, made to wear strange ensembles, and is now currently stuck to a couch because of her employer's odd inventions. Harrison thinks of Gertrude as a dear friend, one who gets him and his oddities. But when he is put in a difficult decision he realizes he might lose his friend if he doesn't step up and take charge.

First - I loved the cover. The colors and the model fit well with the story in my imagination. The author, in the past, has placed a lot of humor into her plots. This time was no exception. I loved the characters and while this book is part of a series, I do think it could be read as a stand alone. The previous characters where there, but it didn't feel like I was missing something had I not read the first book. This is clean historical fiction that is clean and romantic. There is a tiny bit of a mystery, but it's cleared up quickly. It isn't to be read to learn more about history, but to be enjoyed as a sweet romance. The characters are full of life and fit well together with the plot. I can't wait to see what the author chooses to do with the next book.

I received a copy of this book from Bethany House. All thoughts expressed are my own.
