OUT OF THE EMBERS, by Amanda Cabot, was not quite what I expected. The cover is beautiful, and Cabot does a nice job describing the charming down of Mesquite Springs. From the kind townspeople, to the gorgeous wildflowers, we understand this to be the perfect home for the heroine, Evelyn.

When it comes to suspense, I was expecting a bit more. After reading the back of the book, I anticipated tension and suspense from beginning to end. In my opinion, the book got off to a slow start and continued that pace for a while. Things seemed to pick up towards the middle-ish, with much more excitement in the final third. When I got to the part where things started coming together, and the danger was more imminent, it was quite a page-turner.

I did not want to put this book down. I loved this historical fiction. I loved the romance and the bits of intrigue. I loved Evelyn, Polly Dorothy and Wyatt. This made me laugh and cry. I had to know if Someone was out to get Polly or Evelyn. I really enjoyed how strong Evelyn was even though she had lost her family a fairly young age. I received a copy of this book from Revell for a fair and honest opinion that I gave of my own free will.

This first book in Ms. Cabot's new Mesquite Springs series does not disappoint.

Evelyn Radcliffe's orphanage home for the past 10 years burns to the ground one evening as she and Polly, a six-year-old orphan girl, are late returning home from the nearby town. Evelyn is convinced that this is the work of someone who has been watching her, and maybe who killed her parents. She flees with Polly and eventually ends up in Mesquite Springs at the home of rancher Wyatt Clark.

Wyatt was glad to help the two travelers during a storm, but sees Evelyn as a distraction to his future life plans - meanwhile, his mother and sister gladly embrace Evelyn and Polly, and more than one man in town is interested in courting Evelyn.

Mesquite Springs is welcoming, and Wyatt finds himself drawn to the mysterious and lovely Evelyn, and wonders how young Polly truly fits into her life. When danger threatens, will Evelyn have to run again, or can Wyatt help keep her safe while unraveling the menace she feels once and for all - and where does that leave his own plans?

This was a page-turner - a sweet romance with plenty of suspense, that left me surprised at the end. A very enjoyable read, and I'm looking forward to the next book in this series. Highly Recommend.

There*s just something magnetic about a light romantic tale from the Old West. Add some mystery and suspense and you have the ingredients for a very enjoyable read by Amanda Cabot, Out of the Embers.

Evelyn Radcliffe and young Polly escape the orphanage fire that is deliberately set. How far must they run to find a new, secure life$

Evelyn is a very mature, loyal young woman who will do anything to protect those she loves. Her *adoption*of Polly proves how unselfish she is. I liked how her unselfish helping at the Circle C eventually leads to her dream future. But the path to get there is rocky.

Wyatt Clark is quickly interested in the young woman who comes to stay at the Circle C. However, the facts aren*t building a truthful foundation for a friendship, let alone anything more. Wyatt is a very responsible and caring individual who puts others above himself, as well. Which is why he is still present on the Circle C, a place he longs to leave. I love that Wyatt is not afraid to accept help and that he also listens to the voice of reason. These qualities go far in any relationship, be it friendship or love. Eventually, we see the far-reaching effects of lives lived for others.

I am not as impressed with Polly, the child in this novel. However, she does seem to act true to her identity.

Unless he shows up again in future books and bigger roles, I was unimpressed with the story thread of *the Watcher.* You*ll have to read the book to see if you agree. You may form a totally different opinion, which makes writing and reading these reviews fun. You get to read the actual text, write a review, then see what other readers think.

One thing I know. I got a sneak peek at a few pages of the next book, and I am anxious to read the next volume, Dorothy and Brandon*s story.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from Revell through NetGalley. This did not influence my opinions, which are solely my own.

    *My Thoughts*

A sweet, historically set, Texas romance emerges out of the embers with this new Cabot series!

Out of the Embers proves a refreshing read with engaging characters. The perfect story to keep you entertained or to read on the beach, the plot line was unique. Uncommon for many historical novels, this book keeps you on the edge of your seat with a thread of the suspense that is both subtle and surprising.

Evelyn, though she is a very strong character, also shows a lot of fear throughout the story that we can all relate to. We all have situations out of our control that scare us, and Evelyn's story was a tangible, but not pushy reminder, that God is in control.

Wyatt's commitment to his family showed his heart and his relationship with Evelyn, while fast, was sweet and steady.

Polly was the perfect addition to add dimension and a bit of hilarity to the story.

Book one of this new series and a fun, gentle read, perfect for unexpected days off or a vacation read. I'm excited for book 2!
