Product Description

One of the most influential Dutch Reformed thinkers of his day, Abraham Kuyper called for a mediating position on worship, more dignified than low-church Protestants, less ceremonial than Anglicans, while using for a measuring rod practices in Scripture, the patristic era, and the Reformation. This newly translated volume is comprehensive in scope, and offers a helpful introduction by Harry Boonstra which outlines Kuyper's life and historical context. Kuyper's thoughts on worship are strikingly pertinent to our modern times.

Part of the Calvin Institute of Christian Worship Liturgical Studies Series.

Publisher's Description

Few modern figures in the Reformed tradition are as widely influential as Abraham Kuyper, whose views on theology, politics, and Christian culture are renowned. His writings on worship, however, are not as well known. This new English translation of Onze Eredienst fills that gap, offering Kuyper’s clearest thinking on worship and liturgy. Though written nearly a hundred years ago, his perspectives on worship are amazingly relevant to our time. / In a substantive introduction Harry Boonstra outlines Kuyper's life and the historical context in which he wrote. Adding even more luster to the volume are concluding essays by John Bolt, Bryan Spinks, Geoffrey Wainwright, and Nicholas Wolterstorff.

Author Bio

Abraham Kuyper (1837–1920) was a profoundly influential Dutch theologian, journalist, and politician. He served as prime minister of the Netherlands from 1901–1905 and founder of the Anti-Revolutionary Party.

Publisher Description

There are few figures in the Reformed tradition as recently and widely influential as Abraham Kuyper. He served as pastor, theologian, journalist, politician, and statesman and his views on theology, politics, and Christian culture are all well known. However, his writings on worship are not as widely renowned. This new English translation of Onze Eeredienst fills a gap, offering Kuyper’s clearest work on worship.

Although other works on liturgy were written in the Netherlands during Kuyper’s era, none has the scope of Our Worship. In his discussion, he is careful to balance his appreciation of the Reformed tradition he was loyal to with his criticism of its worship practices, both in his own era and historically. Kuyper also provides here an instructive comparison with English and American worship practices, judging the one too detailed and soulless, and the other too casual and without dignity. He concludes that the proper middle way of form and dignity is found in the Reformed tradition.

Translator Harry Boonstra contributes an extremely useful outline of Kuyper’s life and a background on the history of the Reformed church to open the book and give a backdrop against which to view Kuyper’s words. Our Worship is important both as a history and for understanding the enormous influence Abraham Kuyper held — and in many areas, continues to hold — in Reformed thought.
