I chose this curriculum for my 5th grader who hated history, despite it being designed for grades 1-4. My desire was to spark an interest in history, figuring that we would learn far more in the long-term if we were interested!

Not only does my 5th grader love it, but my 3 year old sits right along and listens to the lessons (which are short, but impactful) and he also loves to do the small projects each week alongside his big sister. I appreciate that the projects are easy, and don't require a lot of prep. Each lesson only takes us about 15-20 minutes to get through together (not including the student workbook), but results in a great dialogue which tells me that we are engaged and understanding the content, not just memorizing and regurgitating for an exam. It has helped us dig into specifics with deeper conversations outside of the lessons, which has really surprised me. My desire is to help my children understand the bigger concepts behind history, not just random facts. This curriculum accomplishes that in an engaging and Christ-focused way. I specifically like the way that it admits that those in the past have not acted in a Christ-like fashion and reminds us to be aware of how we act by bringing our actions back to scripture. So many times when I see history curriculum, historical figures are almost put on a pedestal as a hero, but this curriculum has really called it like it is. For example, the conquistadors and their desire to conquer the New World, killing native americans and enslaving them. While they had a goal and a motive, there was another side - it is handled age appropriately and elicits great conversations about what is right, and how God would want us to act.

My 10 year old LOVED using this curriculum! she loved the stories and how they were presented to her. We are a family of color and I was really impressed with the balance between acknowledging both the great accomplishments and the evils done to Native Americans and African Slaves and a great understanding of the origins of the religious groups that formed America. Colorful pages full of stories, poems and journal entries of all people that make up the history of The United States.

I had only two stipulations when I decided that I wanted to use this school year to give my children an in depth look into American history. The first one simply being that it had to stick to American history, while the second one expressed my conviction to use a curriculum that teaches from a Christian viewpoint. After a very long search I found out Notgrass was about to release Our Star-Spangled Story. This curriculum was truly the answer to my prayers and in more ways than one! Not only does it comply with my two stipulations, it offers ideas for simple enrichment activities and crafts that back up each lesson in a simple open and go fashion. The textbooks read like a story and are packed full of colorful pictures and art! The bundle also came with a beautiful timeline book as well as a songbook and CD that contains songs and poems from the different eras (My kids are in love the the Iroquois Lullaby!). We also love the Literature they provide in the bundle as they have chosen books that spark thought and discussion. The student workbook offers short activities to help them grasp the geography and other details of the lesson without demanding any real busy work. We have been truly blessed by this curriculum and I am excited to say that even my daughter (who is more of a math and science kind of girl) has really loved and enjoyed this years history lessons. I highly recommend Our Star-Spangled Story to anyone looking for a fun open and go history curriculum that supports a Christian worldview.

I am now entering my 20th (yes, I said 20th!!) year of homeschooling. Our bookends are very far apart in age. We have many different types of learners here and therefore have used a variety of curriculum. Our 9yo daughter loves this program and still talks about what she learned. She says her favorite part is the Rhythm and Rhymes. But I can add that we also brought in a bunch of historical fiction because she loves to learn even more about all the great historical figures that were in the book. This package presents a wonderful overview of American History. I appreciated how delicately, but honestly covered topics such as the Westward movement shoving the Native Americans out of their rightful homeland and also the abomination of Slavery. The authors used just enough information to spark appropriate discussion without going into unnecessary details for this age group. Parents can decide if they need to add more information depending on their child's maturity level. I love that this is a pick up and go package. I never felt like I needed to sit down for hours prepping or reading through confusing teacher's manuals (been there, done that, hated it). This is one of the easiest to use, busy mom friendly curriculums I have had the privilege of using in my entire homeschool teaching career. I give this 2 thumbs up and five stars!!! Even if you are teaching across multiple levels, you can easily adapt this for a variety of abilities. It would be great to teach anyone from a high K/1-5 grade. My little one loved it so much we ended up doing more that one lesson a day because she was begging to keep going. I highly recommend this program. I have used their high school levels with my older kids and just adore anything Notgrass.

I am using "Star Spangled Story" with my 4th grade "wiggly" boy in our homeschool this year after he and his older siblings watched the entire series of "Liberty's Kids" DVD's on their own last summer. He sits, riveted, listening to the entire chapter as I read it and he gets SO excited when he hears a name, place, or event that he recognizes from the "Liberty's Kids" series. He gets into the activities, asks questions about the reading, and wants to visit every place that is mentioned in the text (lol). Yesterday our family had bad colds and I suggested we skip social studies to give ourselves a bit of a break. My son wouldn't have it; he insisted that we "do history, even if we had to read it as a bedtime story". That, to me, says it all about the excellent fit of this history program for a little boy who loves to be on the move. I love it also and am learning a lot about history myself! Thank you for a great product and program!
