Product Description

Orthodoxy as author G.K. Chesterton employs the term here, means "right opinion." In this, the masterpiece of his brilliant literary career, he applies the concept of correct reasoning to his acceptance of Christian faith. Written in a dawn-to-earth and familiar style, this book nevertheless presents formal, scholarly arguments. Paradox and contradiction, Chesterton maintains, do not constitute barriers to belief; imagination and intuition are as relevant to the process of thought and understanding as logic and rationality. He defines his insights with thought-provoking analogies, personal anecdotes, and engaging humor, making this century-old book a work of enduring charm and persuasion. Unabridged republication of the classic 1908 edition. Paperback, 154 pages. Dover Publications.

Publisher's Description

Orthodoxy, as author G. K. Chesterton employs the term here, means "right opinion." In this, the masterpiece of his brilliant literary career, Chesterton applies the concept of correct reasoning to his acceptance of Christian faith. As he expresses it in his preface, "It is the purpose of the writer to attempt an explanation, not of whether the Christian Faith can be believed, but of how he personally has come to believe it. The book is therefore arranged upon the positive principle of a riddle and its answer. It deals first with all the writer's own solitary and sincere speculations and then with all the startling style in which they are all suddenly satisfied by the Christian Theology. The writer regards it as amounting to a convincing creed. But if it is not that, it is at least a repeated and surprising coincidence."
Written in a down-to-earth and familiar style, Orthodoxy nevertheless presents formal and scholarly arguments in the explanation and defense of the tenets underlying Christianity. Paradox and contradiction, Chesterton maintains, do not constitute barriers to belief; imagination and intuition are as relevant to the processes of thought and understanding as logic and rationality. "Whenever we feel there is something odd in Christian theology," he observes, "we shall generally find that there is something odd in the truth." Chesterton defines his insights with thought-provoking analogies, personal anecdotes, and engaging humor, making his century-old book a work of enduring charm and persuasion.

Chesterton's reasoning in "Orthodoxy" is still relevant today as it was back in his time. This book is a must read as is the book right before this one: Heretics.

This book provide a lot of food for thought. My husband and I have read the book and have been viewing the EWTN "The Common Sense Apostle" - Chesterton. Orthodoxy is a wonderful presentation and just helps one to see things in a fresh way even though it was first written sometime ago. We got original version.

Wow, it's about time GK Chesterton becomes 'rediscovered' by Christians. Reading Chesterton is like reading a little more hard-edged CS Lewis. For pastors and preachers in the Evangelical world don't let Chesterton's Roman Catholicism turn you away. Here is a man who knows how to think Christianly. It falls short of the 5 star only because some will definitely find his style hard to read. Not to mention this is a very affordable edition.
