No Ordinary Marriage is an absolute feast whether you are single, preparing for marriage like me, or already married. The book is divided into three parts. The first part invites us into a biblical framework of marriage. Savage takes us to the first marriage in Genesis 3 and unpacks it with brilliant insights and poignant application. I was quickly ushered into a marriage that was far beyond ordinary. I was introduced to a marriage that had a tremendous amount of glory in it because there is a tremendous amount of God himself in it. Savage writes, "The reason why there is so much glory in marriage is because there is so much of God in marriage. The biblical narrative is at pains to point out God's dynamic role in every step of the first union...No other work of creation is reported in such detail" (pg. 22). The glory of God binds marriages together. Throughout the first part, Savage teaches this truth. However, he also shares how to live for the glory of God in marriage. His answer: cruciform love. Part 2 focuses on the individual callings in marriage. Savage takes a look at our calling as husbands and wives according to Scripture. This section will challenge both men and women to love well and enjoy a union that reflects the glory of God. In the final part of the book, Savage examines marriage and sex, marriage in the church, eruptions in marriage, and single-heartedness. Each of these chapters is enlightening and convicting.

    A Few Things I Enjoyed

The first part of the book alone is worth the purchase of it. Our culture is trying to bind marriages together with anything and everything from sex and money to entertainment and excitement, etc. Yet none of these things possess the power to hold marriages together. We have given marriage an identity that defrauds the beauty of it. Savage brings us back to a view of marriage that is breathtaking, a view that exalts and glorifies God. I deeply enjoyed this part of the book.

The book is well written and convicting. I was challenged to be a man and husband who loves well with a self-emptying love. "The glory of God receives its fullest expression in the self-emptying love of the crucified Christ" (pg. 34). I have the capacity to empty myself into others for the glory of God. What a wonderful and powerful truth. God has designed marriage in such a way that we come together for the glory of God. All the while, Savage taught me what a man of God looks like inside marriage in his chapter called "Husbands".

Lastly, I enjoyed the conclusion. I don't often enjoy the conclusion of the book, if I am honest. It is usually a section I skim quickly at the beginning of the read to get an idea of the author's intentions. However, I found myself intrigued by the conclusion. Savage did more than just wrap up his book. He pointed you to the foundational truth that lied behind the entire book and unpacked it one last time. The glory of a Christian Marriage is a marriage that is Christ-centered. We must put on Christ daily. Savage writes, "The Lord Jesus Christ is the key to God-glorifying marriage" (pg. 167). In Christ, we reach the marriage that God intends for our lives.

Overall, I feasted on No Ordinary Marriage: Together for God's Glory by Tim Savage. This will be a book I definitely revisit as I prepare for and walk in my own marriage.
