to The Restoration Chronicles
When news that the wall of Jerusalem is broken down, and its gates have been burned with fire, Nehemiah, Jewish cupbearer to King Artaxerxes in Persia, seeks God's guidance. After fasting and prayer, he's given leave to travel to Jerusalem and rebuild the city wall, not anticipating all the dangers that await him on his arrival.
The leaders of the surrounding nations become his fierce enemies, plotting to assassinate him and halt the work. A drought, meanwhile, has left the country impoverished, many families resorting to selling their children as bondservants just to keep from starving.
Capturing the rebuilding of the wall through the eyes of a number of characters, On This Foundation is a powerful exploration of faith in the midst of oppression, and hope that, in spite of appearances, the gracious hand of God is upon those who believe.

This novel is the conclusion to The Restoration Chronicles. Nehemiah learns of the destruction of Jerusalems walls and the deplorable condition of the city. Prayerfully seeking Gods guidance, he undertakes the enormous task of rebuilding the walls and protecting Gods city. He becomes the object of hatred for threatened leaders of nearby nations who plot to eliminate him and to stop the rebuilding.
Not only is this the story of Nehemiah and the Jewish nation, it is also the story of a courageous, young woman, grieving for her deceased fianc who died too young, and also a nobleman in sorrow for his wife. And it is the story of the poor faithful who finally are awarded their due.
I highly recommend this captivating novel which sweeps the readers back to a pivotal time in Jewish history. Lynn Austin is skilled at recreating Biblical times. I received this book through TBCN in exchange for an honest review.
CherylAge: 45-54Gender: Female5 Stars Out Of 5Beautiful retelling!July 12, 2016CherylAge: 45-54Gender: FemaleQuality: 0Value: 0Meets Expectations: 0I love how this book is centered on Gods Word. Ive learned so much from Biblical Fiction by a story bringing to light things I missed in my Bible studies. I never realized women took part in rebuilding the walls of Jerusalem. It makes perfect sense, for some families may not have had sons to help, and everybody had to take their part in the mission.
On This Foundation, by Lynn Austin, is book 3 (the final one) in The Restoration Chronicles series and involves the story of Nehemiah and his quest to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem. There are many dangers and hardships, but with faith that God will lead the way he, and others, continue on.
What a beautiful retelling of this Biblical story! It is evident that Ms. Austin did a significant amount of research and considerable dedication went into writing this book. History, infused with the authors imagination, turns this story into a powerful, emotive, and memorable novel.
Nehemiah felt a powerful anger building inside him as the picture of the citys helplessness grew clearer. Security was his livelihood, his passion. ~Quote from the book
My knowledge of Nehemiah and his faith has grown from reading this book, and my heart is touched. The author has recreated a beautiful story and I cant wait to read the other books in the series.

He is a Jew, but has lived in Persia all his life. His father was killed by someone he knew when Nehemiah was very young, leaving Nehemiah as protector of his two younger brothers. Now Nehemiah is a grown man and serves to protect the king. His two younger brothers have returned to Jerusalem. One brother arrives in Susa, the Persian capital, to petition the king for tax relief as there has been a two-year drought in Jerusalem that has severely diminished the crops, leaving many unable to pay the steep taxes imposed by the king. Nehemiahs brother tells him of the state of disrepair in Jerusalem. Nehemiah fasts and prays to God for an answer and boy does God give him one!
The other tangent of the story is about Chana, a young Jewish woman whose fianc is killed shortly before their wedding due to the walls not being built and able to keep out criminals. She is left bitter and unhappy. Her father encourages her to marry and introduces her to a wealthy suitor. Chana is unsure if she is ready to marry and has found a purpose in helping to rebuild the walls of the city. A husband surely wouldnt allow her to continue this work. Nava is a young girl whose family cannot pay their mortgage to Chanas suitor, so they are forced to sell her as a bondservant. She is faced with many struggles as she must adapt to servitude and giving up her freedom. She turns to Chana for help, but both women are bitter and angry. Where is the Almighty One in this suffering?
One of my favorite things about Lynn Austins writings is her God-given ability to take historical people, research the time in which they lived, intertwine fact and fiction to create a believable fictional tale that is a joy to read. I have enjoyed this entire series immensely and encourage readers to get these three books for their personal libraries. These are books to hand down to the next generation. The stories are timeless with biblical truths lived out with a God-focus exemplified by these historical biblical characters.
Robin Willson5 Stars Out Of 5Beautifully woven, with fabulous messages of God's faithfulness.March 26, 2016Robin WillsonQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5I knew the story of Nehemiah from the bible, where he worked for the King of Persia, who noticed that Nehemiah was unhappy and he asked why. When Nehemiah told him he was upset about the destruction of the walls around Jerusalem, his home town, leaving it defenseless - the King gives him permission to go home and rebuild the walls - providing a guard and materials, and making him the governor. What I didn't know was the background on Nehemiah and his brothers that led him to work for the King.
There are other character's lives within the story as well. Can you imagine being put into slavery for 6 years because your family is about to lose their home and land? There was a drought, and people were forced to pay taxes and mortgage their property even though they were starving. For many the only thing they could do was go into bondage to pay their debt - which happens to a young girl.
And then of course Nehemiah is not popular with everyone, and there are plots to remove him. There is another young girl whose family wants her to marry into a political family entrenched in this part of the intrigue. The story is beautifully woven, with fabulous messages of God's faithfulness. This is a book I highly recommend - especially if you think you already know the story!

This was a high paced book based on the book of Nehemiah. This is the third book in Lynn Austin's The Restoration Chronicles. You don't have to read any of the previous books before reading this one.
This book is well written and easy to follow with many unforgettable characters. This book focuses on Nehemiah being called from God to rebuild the city wall of Jerusalem in a time that the people are suffering and looking for a better future.
My favorite character is Nava, who is forced to work as a slave to pay off her father's debts but has more important role in the story, I won't give it away.
I would highly recommend this book all. Lynn Austin is a very talented writer.
I received this book from bookfun.com for my honest opinion.
