Publisher's Description

There isn’t a rule out there that love won’t break. For better or worse.

Turning his back on his reckless lifestyle, former frat boy Clay Walsh has settled down to run an antique shop in a small Midwestern college town . . . and to pursue lofty and outdated theories on love and romance. But when Amber Hewson, a free-spirited woman with a gypsy soul, rents the apartment above his shop, Clay can’t help being attracted to her spontaneous and passionate embrace of life. Amber also finds herself surprisingly drawn to Clay, but his ideas about relationships are unusual to say the least, and they bring to light her own deep wounds and fears about love.

They say opposites attract, but can Clay and Amber move beyond their differences and their pasts to attempt an "old fashioned" courtship?

Old Fashioned is a quirky contemporary romance. You have two characters who are so different. They try to find romance the "old fashioned way" with many laughs along the way. Clay runs his aunt's antique shop. He rents the apartmant above the shop to Amber who just arrived in town. Amber and Clay have different ways of dealing with difficult situations. Overall, it was an enjoyable book.

    My thoughts:

Old Fashioned is a beautiful story of God's redemptive power. This was not what I expected. I thought it was going to be a romantic depiction of what old-fashioned courting can look like today. In a way, it was, but it was more. The focus was more on the how of getting past our past even after it's been covered by the blood of Jesus and forgiven. Our memories have a lot of power over us.

It has some very dramatic, intense scenes that were not included in detail in the movie when I watched it. It was pretty graphic for this gal, but I'm sure many readers may not think so. I think that the book definitely earns the movie's PG 13 rating. I will not allow my daughters to read this. Yes, my elder daughter is 17, but she hasn't been exposed to the type of behavior referenced in Clay's past. I see no reason to expose her to it at this time. After reading this book, which I did prior to watching the movie, I knew I needed to prescreen the movie. I'm glad I did. I found that the scenes I worried about were handled as benignly as possible. It might be good for a senior to read this book if they are planning to go away to school just to show them a possible pitfall of college.

I received this book in exchange for an honest review.

Old Fashioned written by Rene Gutteridge, based on the screenplay by Rik Swartzwelder is a very sweet story. Like the title, former frat boy Clay Walsh desires to live an old-fashioned life style. He regrets his wild, womanizing, if it feels good do it, ways. He realizes that he hurt people, mainly woman, with his wild, uncaring attitudes and actions. He has turned over a new leaf, one that makes folks consider him a very strange man! He wants to only (and always) do the right thing. He desires to please God rather than man. And he is managing to keep his life clean and pureuntil he meets free-spirited Amber! Once she enters the picture poor Clay starts getting a bit confused and tongue tied.

As Clay and Amber get to know each other she sees how he treats her with respect and caring, the way no man ever has. Her friends think she is nuts to consider a relationship with such an odd man. She finds him endearing, yet frustrating. Perhaps she even uses some trickery to get him into her apartmentbut he wont enter, unless she exits! There is no end of humor to the situations they find themselves in.

I love the sweet innocence and humor in this story. I totally get how Gutteridge (and Swartzwelder) are showing us the difference between lifestyle choices. One is sort of holier than thou and the other is party hardy. And wow, what a comparison! There are adult themes in this book (but it does stay clean) such as sexual activity, drinking and bar hopping, but they are shown as negatives. Positive themes such as forgiveness, moving forward, letting go of the past, and finding God are also in Old Fashioned. I think the story itself was very beautiful!
