DOH5 Stars Out Of 5Sing spell Read and WriteSeptember 13, 2016DOHQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5I have used this program for my 4 children, a LD teen and now am using it with my 2 grandchildren. The approach is multisensory. Phonics rules are taught with songs. Learning is faster, more comprehensive and is incrementally well organized. It is a step by step approach. One new rule adds to and builds on the last rule. No confusion. No frustration. In each child I have used this with, they were reading 2-3 grade levels above the grade in which they were testing. I can't say enough about the merits of this program. Beats EVERYTHING I've seen. I tried several others, but always came back to this. It also blends into the 2nd grade BJU Press Spelling book and readers. Easy transition.

It is full of fun pages to help children learn their letters and the sounds that go with them. There are dot to dots, color pages, and pages to cut and paste. My children had lots of fun with this book and didn't seem to notice they were learning at the same time! I recommend SSR&W to anyone who is teaching children to read and wants a total language arts curriculum.

All have become avid readers and I am totally sold on the phonics system. I used the original version, but have purchased this newer one to use with someone else's children. This book includes all the learning styles within the activities. I am using it with a kindergartener.

The only negatives to this program have been that replacement workbooks have not been easily available for purchase until now. And the workbook assignments may be a bit heavy for some kids. The kit includes (or at least it did several years ago!) several games to be played along with the workbook assignments. If you were to do all that the program suggests you do, it could easily dominate your day. But it is easy to tailor it to your needs, too. I am glad to see ChristianBook now offers replacement workbooks at a very reasonable cost as I am going to use the program for our son, with hopes of having similar success as was achieved by our daughter. Overall, two thumbs up!

Q: What book should I use first? How am I supposed to know in what order to do these books?
These books are designed to be used with the "Sing, Spell, Read and Write" program. The instructor's manual would let you know which book to use.
