Product Description

This gripping account of the Danish Resistance during WWII is an inspirational story of courage and bravery during the Holocaust. Annemarie and her best friend, Ellen Rosen, have learned to live with soldiers on every corner and with the deprivations brought on by the war. One day, they receive warning that the German occupying force of Denmark has begun its campaign to "relocate" all the Jews in Denmark. Annemarie's family takes in Ellen, and quickly moves to the coast to escape. This book is a fascinating introduction to the Danish Resistance's success in smuggling nearly almost the entire Jewish population - - nearly 7,000 people - across the sea to Sweden in just under two weeks. Recommended for ages 8 to 12. The 1990 Newbery Medal winner. 137 pages, hardcover with dust jacket. 25th Anniversary Edition.

Publisher's Description

As the German troops begin their campaign to "relocate" all the Jews of Denmark, Annemarie Johansen’s family takes in Annemarie’s best friend, Ellen Rosen, and conceals her as part of the family.

Through the eyes of ten-year-old Annemarie, we watch as the Danish Resistance smuggles almost the entire Jewish population of Denmark, nearly seven thousand people, across the sea to Sweden. The heroism of an entire nation reminds us that there was pride and human decency in the world even during a time of terror and war.

Winner of the 1990 Newbery Medal.
