The landmark general reference Bible that offers the full text of the New Revised Standard Version, now completely revised and updated by leading biblical scholars, including, new introductions and notes, diagrams, charts and maps—25% revised or new material.
After 10 years of new archeological discoveries and changes in biblical studies, it was time for an overhaul of this classic reference work.
With the guidance of the Society of Biblical Literature, an organization of the best biblical scholars world wide, we have selected Dean of Yale Divinity School, Harold Attridge, to oversee the Study Bible's updating and revision.
The fundamental strengths of the first HCSB remain:
- Up–to–date introductions to the Biblical books, based on the latest critical scholarship, by leading experts in the field
- Concise notes, clearly explaining names, dates, places, obscure terms, and other difficulties in reading the Biblical text
- Careful analysis of the structure of Biblical books
- Abundant maps, tables, and charts to enable you to understand the context of the Bible, and to see the relationship among its parts
In this new revised edition every introduction, essay, map, illustration and explanatory note has been reviewed and updated, and new material added.
For instance, there are newly commissioned introductory essays on:
- The archaeology of ancient Israel and the New Testament world,
- The religion of ancient Israel
- The social and historical context of each book of the Bible
- Biblical interpretation
There are completely new introductions and notes for many of the books in the Bible, plus a full revision and updating of all others. Of special interest are:
- The literary history of the Apocrypha
- More references to ancient non–Biblical sources which seem to parallel books in the Bible like the Gnostic gospels uncovered in Egypt or the famous scrolls found near the Dead Sea in Israel
- More comprehensive attention to the interrelationship of Old and New Testaments

Pastor QTexasAge: 45-54Gender: male4 Stars Out Of 5very narrow marginsDecember 18, 2013Pastor QTexasAge: 45-54Gender: maleQuality: 4Value: 4Meets Expectations: 3When I viewed this version of the Harper Collins Study Bible online I didn't notice that the margins are very, very narrow. If you like to make your own notes in the margins (like I do), this version may not be for you. I believe there are other versions of the Harper Collins that have wider margins (the Student Edition may fit the bill). This one is heading back to CBD.
NeilSafford, AZAge: 45-54Gender: male5 Stars Out Of 5Very helpful notesMay 14, 2013NeilSafford, AZAge: 45-54Gender: maleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5The study notes in this Bible are quite helpful and honest. The collection of scholars probably cannot be beat. This resource is a great compliment to the HarperCollins one-volume Bible Commentary. Some of the scholars appear in both resources but the approach is completely different for each. Many of the scholars are different and it's interesting to compare viewpoints. I'm using both right now to study the book of Kings (1&2 Kings). I think the helpfulness of the notes in the Study Bible (by Robert Wilson) are stronger than those in the Commentary (by Richard Nelson). They are definitely different. Of course, whenever there are two different commentators (frequent in these resources) one will be more helpful than the other.
HanleyesSouth Milwaukee, WIAge: 18-24Gender: male5 Stars Out Of 5Premier Study Bible for NRSVOctober 17, 2011HanleyesSouth Milwaukee, WIAge: 18-24Gender: maleQuality: 4Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5This Bible is a great resource for information. The layout is basic with notes at the bottom, text on top. The notes themselves are short but to the point and include some good information. This is a balanced Bible that it presents most of the interpretations. This is because it's done by the Society of Biblical Literature. (That's also the reason I call it the Premier NRSV Study Bible.) HarperOne is the publishing arm of the NRSV and if you go to the official NRSV website (www.nrsv.net) it is the only direct study Bible listed. Quality is good as well -- while it is a hardcover, it seems to have a leather lining on the inside of the covers which is a nice touch. It is fairly noticeable that the binding is glued however and that could prove to be an issue over the years, but the glue looks very thick. If you love the NRSV because of its style and ecumenical nature as I do, then this is a must have study edition!
