Black is a spiritual growth book about dealing with worries for the future and feeling scared and threatened in the "now." This book is particularly relevant at this moment because of the political situation in the United States and the international implications of the executive orders that are coming down.
This book is written by the chaplain of the U.S. Senate and a distinguished Navy veteran, so he has an interesting perspective on fear and looking to the future. He outlines seven principles that Jesues gave to the disciples. There are prayers here as well as personal experiences.
What I liked the most about this book was the style of writing. Even though there is a lot taken from the Bible, it doesn't feel preachy. I enjoyed his stories about his childhood that were interspersed with the deeper discussions. It made the lessons feel more relevant.
I received a free copy of this book from the publisher.
Cricket5 Stars Out Of 5Fear Meets TruthJanuary 27, 2017CricketQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5It seems that everywhere I look I see or hear the word fear. It comes moment by moment in newscasts and the posts on social media. It shows up on titles of blogs and new books. Perhaps it even can whisper in our ear when we are not paying attention. It reminds us that we live in a dangerous world. What we may need to hear and see more of are the evidences of God with us" in the midst.
To that end, Nothing to Fear: Principles & Prayers to Help in a Threatening World by Barry C. Black, Chaplain of the United States Senate, speaks truth in reminders of who we are in Christ and how to find our way back to focus on Him when we slip down the primrose path fear might tempt us toward.

The book is around 230 pages and is organized as follows:
1. 26 chapters (around 8-15 pages) on various topics (serving others, being prepared for life's surprises, conquering fear, living with integrity, avoiding certain things like sloth/gluttony/envy/greed/etc., simplifying life, broken dreams, etc.).
2. Appropriate Bible verses and principles to live by.
3. Suggested prayer at the end of each chapter.
There is also a helpful discussion guide at the end of the book. The text is very readable and smoothly transitions from topic to topic. The author is the former Chief of Navy Chaplains and was also a two star admiral. I have some friends whose son will be going into the Navy later this year and I will give this title to him asa gift. Good read. I was given a review copy by Tyndale Publishers in exchange for a fair and honest review.
