Are you letting your lack of authority paralyze you?
One of the greatest myths of leadership is that you must be in charge in order to lead. Great leaders don't buy it. Great leaders lead with or without the authority and learn to unleash their influence wherever they are.
With practical wisdom and humor, Clay Scroggins will help you nurture your vision and cultivate influence, even when you lack authority in your organization. And he will free you to become the great leader you want to be so you can make a difference right where you are. Even when you're not in charge.
Clay Scroggins is the lead pastor of North Point Community Church, providing visionary and directional leadership for all of the local church staff and congregation. As the original and largest campus of North Point Ministries, ranked by Outreach Magazine in 2014 as the Largest Church in America, NPCC averages over 12,000 people in attendance. Clay works for Andy Stanley, one of the greatest leaders on the planet, and understands firsthand how to manage the tension of leading when youre not in charge.
Starting out as a facilities intern (a.k.a. Vice-President of Nothing), he has worked his way through many organizational levels of North Point Ministries and knows all too well the challenge of authority deprivation. Clay holds a degree in Industrial Engineering from Georgia Tech as well as a Masters degree and doctorate with an emphasis in Online Church from Dallas Theological Seminary. He lives in Forsyth County, Georgia, with his wife, Jenny, and their four children.
Marty1 Stars Out Of 5How to Lead When You're Not in ChargeNovember 9, 2017MartyQuality: 2Value: 1Meets Expectations: 1A senseless monologue. Mostly a rambling collection of thoughts with no theme to tie it together, never really comes to any point. The author should have kept what real content he has to pamphlet. Don't waste your time or money. I would like my money back.
Sarah5 Stars Out Of 5Leadership with Biblical PerspectiveAugust 25, 2017SarahQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5This book was both helpful and humorous, which I greatly appreciated since reading non-fiction isn't my most favorite thing. This book explains how to start leading right now, no matter what seat you're sitting in, or whatever your job title might be, and gives applications that readers can start doing right away to gain influence. The thing that makes this book stand out from all other leadership books I've read is the Biblical perspective that Clay provides throughout. Not only will those working in ministry benefit from the teaching, but so will business executives, teachers, accountants, plumbers, artists - everyone. If you've ever had the thought "if I was in charge..." or "this would work better if..." than this book is for you. Anyone can make change happen if it's done the right way, and this book will guide you through the process.
Sara5 Stars Out Of 5Go buy this book!August 22, 2017SaraQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5How to Lead When You Are Not in Charge is an incredible book. It gives you the insight and tools you need to Lead at whatever stage in life you are at. It doesn't matter if you are the top person in a corporation or a janitor. Clay does an excellent job explaining the best way to Lead anyone is to know how to Lead yourself first. I think this book is perfect for everyone and I highly recommend it.
Isaac5 Stars Out Of 5A Leader's Must-ReadAugust 22, 2017IsaacQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5This book is incredible and needs to be in the hands of every leader. Practical, down-to-earth, and just full of insight. From a perspective of a guy who doesn't just follow one of the greatest leaders, he is a great leader from the position he is in.
You will find yourself not wanting to put this book down as you have multiple "aha" moments.
I have been recommending this book to anyone I come in contact with because the reality is, we all answer to someone.
If you are a defensive person, you may cringe a bit as Clay really asks you to look in the mirror and determine how to really lead yourself well.
Bottom line: It's not position or authority that makes you a great leader, it's influence.
Michael B5 Stars Out Of 5Must Read for every Leadership TeamAugust 22, 2017Michael BQuality: 5Value: 4Meets Expectations: 5I wish I had this book 20 years ago when I started this journey leading inside the church. There is something hard wired in every leader that makes following difficult. We see problems and possibilities and we want to push change forward, but for most of we are not the one holding the authority to make change happen fast. Clay Scroggins unpacks how to deal with this tension in How to Lead When You're Not in Charge.
I'm in a different seat these days. I am the lead pastor and I am still under authority. This is a not a book for some leaders but rather a resource to help to all leaders. We all want to be the point leader. We all think if we were in charge we would advance the mission. We all suffer from the lure of power and affirmation. Clay uses this book to help us face the reality of our own leadership depravity and then leads us toward a path of intentional leadership and service regardless of our title.
You need to read this book because you are called to lead in an honorable way right now. You can't wait for permission or title before you lead. This book is a strategic tool to help you discover how you can start leading now and honor your authority at the same time.
Buy the book. Process the book slowly. Live these principles out. Lead now!
