Publisher's Description

Gripping Sophomore Novel from a Rising Historical Romance Talent

With Britain caught up in WWI, Jack Benningham, heir to the Earl of Stonebrooke, has declared himself a conscientious objector. Instead, he secretly works for the Crown by tracking down German spies on British soil, his wild reputation and society status serving as a foolproof cover.

Blinded by patriotism and concern for her brother on the front lines, wealthy suffragette Grace Mabry will do whatever it takes to assist her country's cause. When she sneaks into a posh London masquerade ball to hand out white feathers of cowardice, she never imagines the chain of events she'll set off when she hands a feather to Jack.

And neither of them could anticipate the extent of the danger and betrayal that follows them--or the faith they'll need to maintain hope.

    Not by Sight

    By Kate Breslin

Grace Mabry will do anything to aid the suffragette effort and help bring the war to an end. And if shaming the wealthy, able-bodied men who refuse to enlist is what she needs to do she'll do it! But when her actions bring down the wrath of her father and Lady Bassett Grace finds herself confined to her home for the foreseeable future.

Jack Benningham, one of Grace's targets for shaming, has a secret of his own and Grace's white feather is merely an amusing diversion to his evening, at least until his plans go awry. And unfortunately for him his evening is about to get considerably worse.

But when Grace and Jack again cross paths their circumstances have changed. Jack is no longer the carefree playboy Grace chanced to meet in London. And Grace is in service with the Women's Forage Corps working as a farm laborer. Two more unlikely people are about to be just what the other needs if only they can see from the heart and not the eyes.

Not by Sight is set in 1917 England as the country deals with the new world that is opening up and changing before them. Those who enjoy historical fiction will find much to like with this book.

I had high expectations for this book since Kate Breslin's first book, For Such a Time, was superb. I was not disappointed. I liked the characters, though not always their motivations for their actions. Almost all of the characters, and especially Grace and Jack, were not as they first seemed to be, or where they? Grace's fellow WFC "sisters" all had hidden secrets, one of which impacted Grace greatly. It was interesting to learn of the work women did at home during World War I, when many of the men were fighting overseas. The Women's Forage Corps traveled in groups to farms to harvest hay that was earmarked for the cavalry horses. The faith aspect of this book was presented in a very natural way. All in all, Not by Sight is a very satisfying book. I recommend it for those who enjoy reading historical fiction.

There really is so much to be enjoyed in this second novel from author Kate Breslin. It is a complex story of relationships set in the context of a nation at war with all of the subtext and drama that is involved in a turbulent time. For those who enjoy a novel with depth and emotion, I would highly recommend this one.

The historical content is outstanding, from research details seamlessly woven into the story that give depth, to the actuality of wartime privations and practices on the home front of Great Britain. Questions about duty and honor abound, as does the theme of judgement, especially when the one observing does not have all of the pertinent information. As a member of a military family, I could really appreciate Graces loyalty and support of her brother as he fights during WWI, and perhaps relate to her character with a better understanding of the emotions that enter in while a loved one is away, even as others go on with the business of living.

Themes of love, loss, and living beyond a tragedy are explored in depth as is the impact we can have on each other with our words and actions. It is an interesting background to this Beauty and the Beast style romance that I enjoyed. Misunderstandings and snap judgements abound and I found myself wondering what it takes to actually know the people we encounter each day.

There is much spiritual substance to consider in this novel from various points of view; both believers and skeptics populate this world, and both groups grapple with why God allows things to happen that He could prevent. There is also some discussion about whether or not God punishes us when we take matters into our own hands.

Kate Breslins sophomore novel is an excellent read for fans of Edwardian Britain, especially those who enjoyed Downton Abbey. I would highly recommend it.

Grace Mabry is filled with patriotism for her native England during WWI; having a twin brother serving in the war, she is certain that other able-bodied men should also be doing their part to help win and end the war. Her passion results in her being sent to assist the war effort in a manner she did anticipate, as she serves on a farm with the Women's Forage Corps. While there, she finds that everyone has secrets, and some are more dangerous than others.

While there were several intriguing components to this story - spies, the Women's Forage Corps, the care Grace put into showing compassion to the other women - it just didn't come together for me. The storyline of seeing past a man's blindness and scars to see to his heart and convince him he was worth loving again should have been refreshingly different, but still somehow fell a bit flat. Maybe I just wasn't in the right mood for this novel at this time, or maybe the story was trying to go too many places at the same time that none of it felt well-developed, but something was missing.

Even though I didn't love this story, I did appreciate the theme of not making assumptions about others, both for the good and the bad. Everyone has secrets, but there is a story behind everyone's past, and a future even when there have been mistakes that seem unforgivable.

I give this book 2 stars, for my own personal tastes and lack of excitement about the story.

Not By Sight is an excellent historical fiction. The amount of research and documentation that went into the book could be seen. The story is filled with emotion, faith, history, family, and romance. I look forward to reading more of Kate Breslin's books.
