NOOMA is a new format for spiritual direction. It's short films touching on issues that we care about, that we want to talk about, and it comes in a way that fits our world. It's a format that's there for us when we need it, as we need it, how we need it. Audio: English. Subtitles: English, French, German, Korean, Mandarin, Portuguese, Spanish.
Garet Robinson2 Stars Out Of 5Nooma are usually great, this one is simply wrongJanuary 5, 2011Garet RobinsonQuality: 5Value: 3Meets Expectations: 4I thoroughly enjoy most of the Nooma videos (only staying away from several) because they are excellent in their production values, short enough for groups, and are provocative.
Unfortunately in order to be provocative Bell hasn't done all his homework in this video. His initial point is that Christ's claims of virgin birth and resurrection aren't unique in His contemporary hearers. One illustration that Bell points to is the Mithraic tradition. In the scope of history this claim is not as concrete as Bell might have people believe. There are no contemporary documents to the first century that affirm the virgin birth of other deities or their death and resurrection as the New Testament teaches. All the documents referencing these points are from several hundred years after the first century.
Jesus' story of virgin birth, vicarious death, and miraculous resurrection are unique claims during His era (and into today.) So the first half of the video, for all its wonderful production values, is inaccurate in its data.
Now Bell does a great job (as usual) tying together that we must provide an answer beyond simple theology. The second half of the video is very good, but the underlying point is troubling in its error. Given that Bell's point leverages so heavily on the unoriginal claims of Christianity there is a great difficulty in recommending this entire video.
