QUALITY: The vinyl COVER is handsome and feels good. The spine is smythe sewn and should last longer than glued. The 9 point TEXT SIZE is decent, about the same as study Bibles. The center column text is smaller, maybe 6-7 point. Do not buy a small Bible for the CONCORDANCE. Only study Bibles come with a large enough concordance to be useful.

ACCESSORIES: The actual MEASUREMENTS are 9.5 x 6.75 x 1.1", about the same as a study Bible, but much thinner. For thinline Bible covers, you want an extra half inch of width (7.25"). Audio Bibles are freely available online. Recommended Bible reference works include the "Believer's Bible Commentary" by William MacDonald, the "New Unger's Bible Dictionary," and Nelson's "Three-In-One Bible Reference Companion."

COMPARE: Like the NASB, the NKJV TRANSLATION is modern and more literal / accurate than most others (NIV, HCSB, ESV, NLT). The NKJV is the only English NT (New Testament) with objective textual footnotes. Like the KJV and NASB, the NKJV italicizes added words, others don't (NIV, HCSB, ESV, NLT). The NKJV is not gender neutralized like most newer versions (NIV, NLT, NRSV, NAB). The NKJV has 400 years of refinement since the KJV. The NKJV is based on the same Greek NT as the KJV. Therefore the NKJV has slightly longer chapters than most other NTs (NIV, ESV, NLT). Having translated much of the Greek NT in seminary, I trust the NKJV.

IMPROVEMENTS: Add "Read-Along" alternative translation notes and replace the useless concordance with a combo topical index / glossary, like in the "NKJV Open Bible." Replace the family records pages with a harmony of Samuel / Kings / Chronicles and modern maps of the Mediterranean area and the Middle East.

the paper glued to the inside of the cover was apllied shabby and in consistant,, the index tabs was cut un-even and cut into the paper where it looks like I ripped my page.. and the GLUED binding was boxed to soon after the glue was applied because the glue got into un intended places! the inner liner of the cover wripped when i fully opened the bible because it had glue on it.. i thought this was smith sewn??

    i LOVE the leather tho!

I bought the Holman NKJV Large Print Ultrathin Reference Bible in Brown Genuine Cowhide for my wife for Christmas. I had to order it on the phone, since the imprinting I wanted took two lines (she has a very long name!) Note to CBD: Please make two-line imprinting an option on the internet!

    The pros:

*Great version, very literal to the majority/Byzantine/Textus Receptus text tradition. A great thing about the NKJV is the notes that give information about textual variants without judging "better" vs. "worse" manuscripts, just the facts.

*Cover: Very soft, great feel. Great price for this quality of cover. Raised ribs on spine add an extra nice touch. One of the best things about this Bible. If you get this, do not hide it in a Bible cover--that would be a shame!

*Font: Clear, dark, readable. Good size--not giant, but bold enough to read clearly.

*Concordance--very complete for this size of a Bible. A surprising feature in an ultrathin.

*Color maps--8 absolutely stunning, bold, glossy maps. Really pretty. [Minor point: font on the maps is pretty tiny.]

*Physical size--Nice feel. Ultrathin means it doesn't weigh too much, like many large print editions would.

*Sewn binding! A bit hard to find in an inexpensive NKJV. This makes it more durable.

*References--Very comprehensive. The font is smaller than the text, but still readable.

    The cons:

*As an ultrathin, the paper is very thin. As a result, some ghosting of text from the opposite side of the sheet is clear. However, since the font is clear and dark, this does not make it too difficult to read. I did not test the paper with a highlighter or pen, so I can't comment on bleed-through or the lack thereof.

*I love the references, and I know center-column is a time-honored tradition. But it can be more difficult to find the references in this rather than in a side column or references on two outside columns.

*I do like the font, but it isn't giant. If you have difficulty reading small print, it may not be best for you. There are other Bibles with larger fonts--although, it is a trade-off. Most of those either are physically bigger, fewer or no references, or inferior design [such as glued binding instead of sewn.]

*Margins somewhat narrow for note-taking. However, if you don't write in your Bible, that would not be an issue.

    Neutrals:

*Verse-by-verse format. Not everyone is a fan of this, but it does speed up the finding of a passage.

*Words of Christ in Red. Some like, some don't. I wouldn't want to judge the choice on that.

Overall, an *excellent* value. There are premium NKJV Bibles out there, and their quality might be marginally better. However, at this price you will not find a finer NKJV Bible. If you've been looking for a nicer NKJV, don't need giant print and want something that doesn't weigh a ton, I would not pass this up.
