Bad Leather, Awesome Content
September 16, 2016
Battled with either getting the NASB or this one, ended up going with this one because I was in a NKJV mood I guess, if you're planning on doing fairly in depth study I might recommend the NASB one, but both are good and reliable.
Bonded Leather - Possibly the worst bonded leather I've seen, especially for a $50 bible, or $65 Canadian which I paid (Actually think I bought mine off Amazon). Its very thin and cheap feeling, the edges of it could practically cut your hand open if you gripped it wrong . . . just very poor bonded leather, it won't last long before it starts cracking thats for sure. I've seen bonded leather from Zondervan that is much much better. In hindsight, if I would have known how much I would have enjoyed the Bible I would have spent the money and got the genuine leather one.
Paper - Sub par, but honestly, probably average for a Bible in this price range with that much paper. I'm actually not getting at how thin it is, its actually not that bad, it has less ghosting than my $240 R.L Allan (which is frustrating), but you can just feel the paper quality isn't anything premium, but its still ok.
Text Block - Awesome, I actually love the layout and text that Kirkbride does, I think its an 8 point font but WAY more readable than other 8 point fonts I have and have seen, they actually have spacing in between lines and that makes a huge difference. The clarity of the actual printed text isn't crisp by any means, at least not when comparing it to a premium Bible, but still very readable and typical for a Bible in this price range.
Binding - Not the cover, but the binding itself actually seems really good, sewn which is awesome. Impressed actually, probably has a long life ahead of it.
Awesome. Again, a NASB would be nice, but you got to love the beauty of the NKJV and how it flows in a poetic way yet retaining a fairly accurate and reliable reputation. Not everyones cup of tea, but I enjoy it. As far as the chain reference system goes (which is probably why most people buy this . . . ), it gets 5 stars. Absolutely awesome system for topical research and studying, PLUS, there is a TON of extra information in the back of this Bible, and really good information, all sorts of stuff and a pretty good concordance. The scripture text itself is actually only about a third of this Bible, the other third is the extras, thats how much stuff is in this Bible.
Overall, this is honestly an invaluable tool to have on my shelf for studies and refining, I don't regret this purchase. Pretty bulky to use as a primary Bible, but totally doable if thats your thing. I love it, poor bonded leather is my biggest peeve, but still a great Bible, highly recommend.
