    From my initial view of this book, it appears to be more for the Bible Teacher or the Pastor. Although a huge setback for this type of bible is that it lacks cross-references, which every Bible Teacher and Pastor should have in a Bible they use.

    There is a generous concordance and well put together index. There are also 2 ribbon markers which is very handy when studying and cross-referencing. The font is small enough to read yet large enough for this bible to be quite heavy and not one you would want to carry around too often. There are no study notes found in this bible but rather articles to assist in preaching certain passages. There are also Presenting the Message, Living the Message, Applying the Message, and Discerning the Meaning excerpts found throughout the bible that assist in preparing a sermon and living out that sermon. I really enjoy the excerpts because it makes it clear that teachers and preachers of the Word are not just to teach and preach the Word of God but to live the Word of God and give tips for practical application of the Word so that others can live out the Word as well. As with most bibles, there are book introductions and outlines as well as section headers.

    {FYI: I received this book from the publisher in exchange for my HONEST opinion.}

    THE VINE'S EXPOSITORY BIBLE - The Emphasis Is On EXPOSITORY!

    I read a story one time, about a minister who was engaged in conversation with a good friend. His friend was asking him about his sermons, and the minister replied,

    "Well, I study all week for my sermon. And when I get into the pulpit, the sermon I prepared is a good sermon. Then I start preaching, and it doesn't sound anything like what I prepared . . . but it's a better sermon. Now, if you want to hear a really good sermon, walk home with me of a Sunday evening, and I'll tell you what I should have said."

    That . . . in a nutshell . . . is what you have in your hands when you open THE VINE'S EXPOSITORY BIBLE. You have over 60 years of blood, sweat and tears in the service of the Lord, distilled and distributed throughout the text of the Old and New Testaments. The New King James Version enables the reader to engage the Biblical text without the sometimes confusing language of the KJV, while still remaining faithful to the Authorized Version.

    To this text Pastor Dr. Jerry Vines brings his magnum opus; 24 years worth of expository messages, from every book of the Bible, delivered from the pulpit of the First Baptist Church of Jacksonville, Florida. Pastor Vines introduces each book, providing an explanation of the authorship, date, outline, and major themes of the book. Then as the reader progresses through the Bible, Paster Vines provides numerous helps (I consider them "gems," personally!): Expository Messages ('PRESENTING THE MESSAGE"), word studies ("DISCERNING THE MEANING,") application ("APPLYING THE MESSAGE"), and personal application and growth ("LIVING THE MESSAGE.")

    This may seem "complicated" in this review, but in actuality it is practically seamless. These "gems" are strategically placed throughout the text, so that God's Word remains central. The helps are actually in the right place; no flipping back and forth, no myriad cross references to distract you. It's the closest thing to "total immersion" in Scripture reading that I've come across in a study Bible.

    The maps are full-color, and the one on Jesus' Ministry is especially interesting, with "text balloons" showing where various incidents in Jesus' ministry took place, geographically. Also included is a very nice (not exhaustive, but nice) concordance, and the Expository Bible Index, which will help the reader find all of the "gems" that are scattered throughout the VINE'S EXPOSITORY BIBLE.

    If I don't meet Pastor Dr. Jerry Vines in this life, I'll certainly be looking him up in the next. I mean, after over 60 years in the ministry, the man is working on his PhD at the Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. For fun. I want to meet this man!

    This is a bible full of helps for those who are preachers, teachers or avid learners. Contained within the NKJV text of the Scriptures are found several helpful features. All of the features are presented in a larger than normal font for a study bible of this caliber. The font size is a 10.5, whereas many other bibles I have used were an 8 or 9 font size. This makes for an easy to read and well laid out bible.

    There are over 200 sermon outlines presented by the editor, Jerry Vine, in the "Presenting the Message" insets, almost 150 "Living the Message" articles which help clarify how a Christian should apply the Scriptures, over 200 "Applying the Message" notes to help see the relevance of Scripture in the Christian life. There are additionally over 300 "Discerning the Meaning" word studies to help understand the nuances of words which have multiple understandings. Each book of the bible have an introduction discussing authorship, date and outline or themes contained with the book.

    Included are two ribbon markers, topical index, concordance and full-color maps. As one can see this is a very helpful bible and is perfect for the preacher, teacher, or student who looks for good study material.

    I received a copy of this bible for free from BookLook Bloggers in exchange for a review. The review did not have to be positive. All thoughts about the bible are my own.
