This review was written for NIV God's Justice: The Holy Bible, hardcover.
The God's Justice Bible is a new Bible whose main subject is social justice and how this theme is revealed in every book of the Bible. The version that has been used for this Bible is the very well-known NIV. The text comes in a single column with notes at the bottom of the page. Books and chapters indicators are also located at the bottom of the page instead of on the top. Every book is preceded by an introduction written by different scholars from different countries, all of them familiars with the subject of social justice. A total of 57 international scholars and writers have contributed to the edition and publication of this study Bible.

The public to whom this Bible is addressed is quiet defined and limited. This Bible is very appropriate for those Christians who are involved in politics and social movements. If you are looking for a Bible with exegetical notes and written from a theological perspective this is not a Bible you may want to consider. However, explanatory notes are well written thought they are not abundant as in other study Bible; they are sufficient for what is intended in this Bible. Notes are mainly focused on those passages that are related to the problems of injustice in the world. Typeface and print are very convenient and well developed.

This Bible offers cross references, which is always helpful for readers. A remarkable feature this Bible offers is the questions for reflection located at the end of each book. These questions are extracted from the correspondent book and related to the topic of social justice as presented by every book. A short prayer can be found at the end of each book as well.

Something that I miss in this book is the inclusion of maps and charts. I think the topic of social justice and social injustice is very appropriate for the inclusion of map and statistics showing the prevalence of social injustice in our world.

God's Justice Bible (NIV) was intriguing when I saw it. The cover was very pleasing and enticing so I thought it would be worth the time to consider. Overall, the look and feel of the study Bible is excellent. It is a sturdy hardback with a nice dust cover. In addition to this, the format is very appealing as it is single column so the text is very easy to read. I also found the adornment of the pages very attractive. One interesting aspect of the Bible is the placement of the book, chapter, and verse at the bottom corner of the page instead of the top of the page. This is a minor change, but I have found it is a difficult change with which to adjust easily. Overall, the format and design of the study Bible is superb and one which other publishers need to emulate.

The introduction to the study Bible was very good and provided a good foundation for the reality of God's justice in history as recorded in the Scriptures. In addition to this, each book of the Bible has an introduction which relates it to the theme of God's justice. I was pleasantly surprised to see so many contributor's from different backgrounds and nationalities. It was rather refreshing to be able to gain such a wide range of insights. The study notes in conjunction with the text of Scripture of sparse and primarily relate to the theme of justice so they are very limited in their scope which makes sense with the study Bible's focus on the theme of God's justice. At the end of the day, I find the level of specificity to be a draw back on the study Bible because it distorts the Bible to be read in through only one lens. I would much rather have preferred a short little Bible handbook on God's justice with each of the introductions being a chapter.

I was intrigued by the idea of the NIV, Gods Justice Bible, Hardcover: The Flourishing of Creation and the Destruction of Evil. After all, on the back cover description of the book, the editors remind us that Gods justicehis plan for setting things rightis a foundational principle of the Bible. They then explain that what theyve done with the Bible is to trace this theme of justice all the way from Genesis to Revelation to show that is a backbone of scripture.

Lets begin this review by pointing out a few of the features of this Bible:

This Bible contains the complete NIV text of the Bible. It is a translation Im not personally fond of, but I didnt agree to review this Bible on the basis of translation, so lets move on.

There are book introductions to each book of the Bible. These are written by a team of international writers, so a true global perspective is brought to the commentary on the text.

Like most study Bibles, there are notes at the bottoms of each page to commentate on specific verses. All these notes take a justice perspective on how the Bible relates to justice and to the injustice in the world that surrounds us.

There are questions for reflection and a prayer included at the end of each book of the Bible.

There are lovely woodcut tree images at the introduction to each book of the Bible, and edging decorations based on the section of the Bible that the book is in.

The printing of the text is a nice size and is single column in nature. This makes for a very nicely defined differentiation between prose and poetry in the Bible. I do hate that theres very little space in the margins in the prose sections of the Bible. If you like to take notes in your Bible, this isnt the kind of Bible youll be able to do this with.

I also would have liked to see some special sidebars and articles addressing specific social justice issues and what the Bible has to say about them. However, the notes that commentate on each verse do commentate about specific justice issues. I just would have liked to have seen them all gathered together into articles are an index.

This is probably not the Bible that youre going to want to use at your primary study Bible because all the notes and articles in the Bible are justice themed. However, this is a nice addition to my library as I can check out these justice themed notes as I am studying and completing lesson preparation.

Justice has long been a theme of the Christian Church, but with few exceptions we hear little about it from those who speak most loudly for the church. Tim Stafford and his team of 56 writers plus additional staff have put together a useful tool for perceiving and understanding the place justice has in Gods economy.

There is much to excite the Christian leader or layperson as he picks up this volume for the first time. I was pleased that the editor chose to use the NIV (2011) to use as a foundation for the printed version of the Justice Bible. Though some ma have preferred an earlier NIV version, by choosing the NIV this Study Bible does have a well-respected foundation upon which to build.

However, having noted the translation, the first thing I noticed (and confirmed by reading the introduction) was the international flavor of the book. Book notes are written by scholars and leaders from all over the world. There are very few pages without notes - demonstrating that, to these authors, Gods justice is pervasive throughout time and the scriptures. I was also glad to see each book concludes with Questions for Reflection - these are brief but to the point.

That does not mean that this Study Bible is perfect (but what is?). First, the notes do not stand out - the font is small and and the notes brief compared to the text they discuss. There are no formal cross references which would allow the reader to see how individual themes continue throughout the scriptures. There are some references within the notes, but these are scattered throughout the text and follow no strict pattern.

Though the notes do have an international authorship, the notes for each book are still the work of a single author from a single country. I dont know if having a team of authors from two or more countries work on each Bible book would have made a difference, but it would have better expressed the international flavor of the book

Also, with so many notes, spread out through the whole text of scripture, an index is required - sadly, there is none. This makes finding notes and Bible texts which address a particular theme difficult (if not impossible) to find. With no index, this Bible could be helped by making a searchable digital version of the book. As in the past, I would like to see WordSearch or LOGOS add this to their digital libraries for easier use by the reader. With no index, it also may mean that this Bible is more suitable for reading than for studying. As I have noted in the past, accessibility is as important, if not more important, than content. This Bible falls short on accessibility.

I would recommend this Bible be made available to all pastors - we each work in justice ministries in one way or another. The same could be true of missionaries and those called to work among the worlds hurting and abused. Though this Bible does not need to be in every teachers home, it would find a place in the church library where teachers and others would have access to its contents for personal use.

The NIV God's Justice Bible contains the full text of the Holy Bible in the New International English Language Version. This edition of the Bible is hardcover with a paper book jacket.

You may be thinking that you already own enough Bibles in your house. You may be asking,

"How is this Bible different than other Bibles that you may already own?"

*This edition connects the theme of God's justice throughout the entire Bible.

*Each book of the Bible contains an introduction that is written by one of 56 Biblical scholars, writers and activists from around the world that are passionate about justice.

*There are Questions for Reflection at the end of every Book of the Bible.

*There is a relevant prayer at the end of every book of the Bible.

*There are study notes in this Bible about the problems of injustice in our world: governmental oppression, human trafficking, slavery, financial inequality and others.

I recommend this Bible for anyone that cares deeply about the injustices in the world. The study notes and the commentaries in this Bible will address God's plan to restore His creation. You will be able to not only learn about the scriptures but be able to look at them from a new perspective.

This Bible is beautifully designed with images of colorful trees on the cover that also carry throughout all of the pages in the Bible. I do think that if you plan to use the Bible frequently that the paper book jacket will probably not be able to hold up long term. That would be alright since the hardcover Bible itself also has the same design on the front.
