The first book in Ronie Kendig's "Discarded Heroes" series, I struggled to put this book down. I love Kendig's blend of action and story. She keeps it moving without getting too bogged down in the details of black ops or the relationships - everything works together to keep you interested and move the story forward. If you enjoy Dee Henderson's books, then this is a must-read.
Wow! What a book. From the moment of Maxs bike accident in Nightshade, Ronie Kendig had me hooked. I could not put it down until the gut-wrenching rescue at the end. Nightshade will keep you on the edge of your seat and turning pages to see what happens next. When Max, a former Navy SEAL, joins an elite Black Ops unit that is so top-secret, it doesnt exist, he embarks on a journey that will take him to the depths of his worst nightmare and back. Because of his temper, Maxs wife Sydney has a restraining order placed against him and files for divorce on the advice of her well meaning but mislead family. Believing he has nothing to lose, Max risks life and limb in daring rescues only to have his wife Sydney become involved in an investigation in search of the mystery team that saved the life of a young woman and her son. Through the efforts of a Christian team member, Max is not so gently forced to face the realities of life and the work of a greater being than himself. As he makes his way back to God, he faces the greatest challenge of his life in a rescue of a missionary couple in hostile territory that turns into a fight not only for his own life, but the life of his team and his wife. The stark realism of the situations in other parts of the world, the fierce determination of one woman to uncover secrets, and the dedication of a team to their country and fellow man give this novel all the elements for a great adventure in a search to find ones self and understand what is worth saving.
