Oh, I wanted to like this one more than I did. I LOVE Amy Parker's children's books and was excited to see she was coming out with a collection of Biblical bedtime stories. Maybe I set myself up for disappointment with my high expectations. The stories are good. The pictures are good. The 'extras' are good. But it's all just good...and I kind of expected great. The book is smaller than I thought for a collection of stories and I think it would be better if it were a larger size. I couldn't figure out the target age range for the stories. On one hand, the book seems better for a child who can read it him/herself. Yet since it's a bedtime collection, it seems as if it should be read to a younger child. Plus there are some slightly cheesy rhymes with each story...maybe too cheesy for older kids? Yet my almost-3-year-old seems too young to understand the stories written as they are, especially without many pictures and in a smallish book. Am I being hard to please? Maybe. But unfortunately was just 3 out of 5 stars for me.

This book is a wonderful combination of Bible stories and bedtime wind-down.

The cover is nice and robust, and inviting to even littler hands. The jacket holds a picture in white and blue of sheep lying in a pasture and staring up at a starry skypeaceful, dreamy and inviting for bedtime. Before the entire thing begins, there's a quick note to parents which explains that these are favorite Bible stories told in such a way to make a perfect bedtime read. After that, the book is broken down into the New Testament and Old Testament, each one holding 15 of the most known and loved tales.

The first thing which made me smile was found in the Table of Content. The Bible stories, while very familiar, are given interesting and cute titles such as 'The Wimpy Warrior' (the story of Gideon), ' Angels in the Sky' (angels appearing to shepherds), or 'The Nice Neighbor' (the good Samaritan). The Bible tales are written at a level young listeners are sure to understand and even comes across with very natural dialogue and vocabulary for that age group. They read like bedtime stories without losing the message. During each story, a fitting, two-line rhyme is inserted, which kids will quickly pick up on and repeat. They add fun while allowing the listener to get involved just a little bit. The prayers at the end are short, meaningful and sweet. Add a last night-night phrase with the story's main individual, and the stage is set for a comfortable sleep.

The illustrations are bright, soothing and bring across the characters and stories nicely. It's fun to glance through them, and many are easy to recognize. The prayer is accompanied by a modern day scene to bring the story back closer to home. They offer just enough to look at to keep things interesting without hyping up the tension to make sleep more difficult.

I really enjoyed the stories as well as the way they were done, and can recommend it to anyone looking for this type of bedtime read. It's a wonderful way to introduce the Bible stories, keep them interesting and give that last bit of warmth before dreamland sets in.

Comprised of 30 Bible stories from both the Old and New Testament, written to be read aloud before bedtime, and accompanied by charming and colorful illustrations.

Each story includes a Bible reference from where the story was taken, as well as a rhyming poem pertaining to the story, and nighttime prayer. The stories have very simplified language, but the print is not large enough for super young readers, so it seems to be a perfect read aloud for pre-school age children.

The illustrations are charming and complement the style of this Bible storybook well. The book is hardcover bound with a slightly padded front cover, with sturdy slick pages that will last well through the years, though best keep out of reach of babies. This would make an excellent gift for a new young one.

A delightful book that introduces young children to 30 of the most well known stories in the Bible. Perfect for sharing and reading aloud.

I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
