Product Description

New Testament Textual Criticism presents the fundamentals of the art and science of text criticism in a concise manner. Readers will learn the importance of studying ancient texts to recapture as nearly as possible the original language and thought of the autographs, discover manuscript families and see why variant readings crept into each, and study the history of critical study and principles used to establish original reading.

This work includes chapter summary and discussion questions, as well as appendixes that offer examples of types of errors in New Testament manuscripts, the most important witnesses to various books of the New Testament, and a worksheet students can use for conducting textual analysis.

The aim of the book is to explain the basics of New Testament textual criticism for laypeople and pastors in a simple and understandable way. It is also a good refresher for those who have been familiar with textual criticism. I think both of these are true. This volume can help readers without knowledge of textual criticism get a basic and foundational knowledge of the topic. Those reading it again will be reminded of what textual criticism is all about. In three chapters he was able to present the various textual evidences in recovering the original text, to explain the principles in finding the original reading and to demonstrate the practice of textual criticism in three NT passages.

My only criticism is that he also mentioned that the book would be helpful in the debate about Greek text of the King James Version. Well maybe when he wrote the book in 1994 but probably not today with websites (and other resources) defending the Greek text of the KJV abound with claims of validity. But even with this comment I still highly recommend this book for not only that it would help in understanding textual criticism with a quick read but I think it would help in reading other longer and more detailed books about textual criticism.

Black's little booklet (70 pages) is worth its weight in gold! I learned everything I needed to know about New Testament textual criticism in a fraction of the time it took to digest Greenlee, Metzger, and Bruce. And for just $11.49, you won't be able to beat it. If you've ever been interested in New Testament textual criticism, buy this little booklet, find a quiet place to sit and read it, and prepare yourself to be pleasantly surprised by how easy it is to understand and how profitable it is for your understanding of Scripture. Happy reading.
