I have used this curriculum with my 8-year-old son, who is dyslexic, and my 5-year-old daughter, who wants to write cursive like her big brothers and sisters, with great success. When my son was writing in print, he was constantly flipping letters or forming them from the bottom up. He mixed capitals and lowercase letters in his words and the size of his letters was inconsistent. Cursive has solved all of these problems. My daughter is completely self-motivated and loves her cursive book.

I like this curriculum because it introduces a letter, and then the child practices the letter. The black-and-white pages are attractive and uncluttered. There are "fun exercises & artwork" pages after the letter practice, or sometimes a review page. These pages provide a nice break between letters and we have used them to practice the child's signature. It introduces letters in alphabetical order, and is very straight-forward and easy to understand for both the parent and the child. I have had my children try many, many different styles of handwriting over our 10 years of homeschooling, and this has been one of the easiest with the best results. Legible, neat handwriting is still a skill worth perfecting. This program is providing that for my children.

The only drawback that I see with it is that it is expensive. With that said, if I had bought this for my son rather than the other books we have tried and set aside unfinished, it would have been a bargain.

I have always taught my children to print with joining strokes so that transitioning them to curive would be more simple. The matter was then which program to use. I had tried a few options but ended up using this for four (going on five) of my children and I am very satisfied. There are no teacher instructions, or few, as it is best utilized by a child who can read, but teacher oversight as they are forming the letters is critical (but this is important in tutoring your homeschooled child anyway, in my opinion, regardless of curriculum used). New American Cursive is similar to D'Nealian, which I learned, and I am more pleased with this creation from Memoria Press than other offerings of D'Nealian. There is ample space to practice, the child is often, if not daily, asked to evaluate their handwriting and mark their best work. It may not be for everyone, but we have used all three levels and both the scripture and other quotes versions of this material and have enjoyed all of them. I wish they were slightly less pricey, but for a whole year of handwriting, it is still very reasonable.

If you are looking for a systematic way to introduce your child to cursive writing, this is NOT it! I purchased New American Cursive thinking that it would provide a nice transition to cursive because some of the capital letters retained the same formation as their printing counterparts. There is very little way in direction for the "teacher" and each letter is taught in alphabetical order, not similar strokes. There is very little instruction available to students or their teachers. Right off the bat, the book is asking students to "trace" connected letters and words without understanding the correct formation of the letters, which results in a great deal of confusion if not dealt with properly. If you use this program, be prepared to improvise and create activities independent of the book! This book IS well made, but it is not well thought out, in my opinion. It was very expensive, as far as handwriting instruction goes. I wish that I would have saved my money and stuck with my previous handwriting program.
