Series: Darkwater Saga
Victory over the dark forces during the feast of Bas-solas should have guaranteed safety for the continent. Instead, Willet and the rest of the Vigil discover they've been outsmarted by those seeking to unleash the evil that inhabits the Darkwater. Jorgen, the member of the Vigil assigned to Frayel, has gone missing, and new attacks have struck at the six kingdoms' ability to defend themselves.
Just when the Vigil thought they had quenched the menace from their enemy in Collum, a new threat emerges: assassins hunting the Vigil, men and women who cannot be seen until it's too late. The orders of the church and the rulers of the kingdoms, fearing the loss of the Vigil's members altogether, have decided to take them into protective custody to safeguard their gift. On Pellin's orders, the Vigil scatters, leaving Willet to be taken prisoner by the church in Bunard.
In the midst of this, Willet learns of the murder of an obscure nobleman's daughter by one of the unseen assassins. Now he must escape his imprisonment and brave the wrath of the church to find the killer in order to turn back this latest threat to the northern continent.
Fay Mary FoxsAge: Under 185 Stars Out Of 5Awesome!January 10, 2017Fay Mary FoxsAge: Under 18Quality: 4Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5I love these books! The storyline is fantastic! True there is some violence, therefore I would not recommend it for a younger audience, but for teenagers and adults alike it is a very good read. Some people might not like the writing style, due to the descriptive way that it is written. I on the other hand LOVE IT! If you are a Tolkien fan and have read the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit, I would highly recommend it to you. A Must Read!!!!!!!!!
CozyWriter'sDen5 Stars Out Of 5AMAZING!December 28, 2016CozyWriter'sDenQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5Love. Love. Love! The Darkwater Saga series is incredible. I will most definitely be re-reading this series in its entirety.
Patrick Carr is a very talented writer and story teller. The world he has created is immensely complex and works together with perfect clarity. I never found myself lost in the different places or confused with the explanations of his world. Instead, I was transported into a world where gifted people live among the ungifted and a secret order called the vigil holds all to account. The gift of domere - that of all the Vigil - is a very powerful gift. Those who are domere can re-live all the thoughts and actions of any person with a mere touch and discern truth beyond a shadow of a doubt. They can track memories anywhere .... even off a piece of stone or wood. Armed with this powerful ability to discern anyone's thoughts, the Vigil has for centuries enforced justice to the most powerful people in the kingdom.
Now, however, the Vigil is in immense danger as one of their own has been corrupted by the Darkwater - a wicked force that taints the world. As the Vigil is viciously attacked on all fronts and the ancient group is threatened with extinction, the most unlikely member of the Vigil must fight to keep them all alive. The result? A rapid paced adventure that you will not be able to put down for a moment.
This book is fantastic. Truly fantastic. I highly recommend this series. Do read them in order though, it will make no sense to jump part-way into this series.
Thank-you to Graf Martin Communcations and Baker Publishing House for a complimentary copy of this book.
daleenc3 Stars Out Of 5A good read!December 4, 2016daleencQuality: 4Value: 5Meets Expectations: 4Quick Review:
Interesting, fun, fantasy worth it if you dare to read.
What I liked:
Willet. He was ornery, stubborn, and dedicated. I also loved the urchins that were taken along with the Vigil and the trouble that they got into.😀 They were hilarious. I loved the idea of the Sentinel and the way Wag saw himself. Too bad we didnt get a glimpse into Tug from Rangers Apprentice the way we did Wag.
What I didnt like:
I didnt really like the style of writing. It was a great story, yeah, and there was nothing wrong with the writing style it just wasnt me. It also took a bit to get into the story. Once I was in, though, it took off and I could hardly put it down.
Who I would recommend this to:
Christian fantasy lovers.

For the story to make sense you need to read the first book before starting this one.
I thoroughly enjoyed returning to the fantasy land that this author has crafted. The characters are so well developed and presented that I connected with them and felt their frustration as they were trying to sort out the mystery of where the danger was coming from.
The plot was filled with a lot of twists and turns that really made me focus my attention on the story to follow what was going on. This is a great book to get lost in and lose track of time.

LaurinBColoradoAge: 35-44Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5Awesome!November 28, 2016LaurinBColoradoAge: 35-44Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5After the defeat of Laewan at Bas-Solas, Lord Willet Dura and the other members of the Vigil believe the danger has passed. But then Willet is attacked by an invisible foe, and the illusion of peace is shattered. The group must defy the Church to save themselves and the rest of the northern continent from certain destruction. Splitting up, the Vigil will risk their lives to track down the Clast and try to discover what the Darkwater really is.
I waited a year for this book. And it was well worth the wait! Patrick Carr never fails to suck me into his story with multi-layered characters and complex plots. This world that Carr has created is so full and so fascinating, he could write novels set here for decades and never run out of material. And his characters are complex enough that they could continue to evolve over that time, and we we'd still not know their whole stories. I love this typeoftale: one that makes me feel like I'm right there, riding alongside Willet and Bolt, uncovering new clues and helping to battle the evils of the Darkwater. Wonderful!
The only downside? I'm guessing I have to wait another year for the next installment... At least I know it will be worth it!
*Note: you definitely want to read this series in order; otherwise, you will find yourself very confused. While it's not absolutely necessary, I'd suggest starting with the introductory novella, By Divine Right. Butyou really should readthe first book, The Shock of Night, before diving into The Shattered Vigil.
Someone asked me recently why I like to prefer to read fiction. Carr's Darkwater Saga is a perfect example of why. There is so much Truth woven into this fantastical tale that, even though the story is not real, I find myself growing in the knowledge of God while thoroughly enjoying being swept away to a land of magic and mystery. For me, Truth is plain in non-fiction, but Truth is alive in fiction! Especially in such a well-written story as The Shattered Vigil.
Many thanks to Bethany House Publishers for the copy of this novel for review purposes. I was not required to give a positive review. All opinions are my very own!
