It was interesting to me because I do preach on occasion and teach two different Bible classes at my church and I thought this would be a great resource to have on hand. It is good for what it is, which is a suggestion book at best. I was not as impressed as some are by the names and people included in the book simply because the material was over-simplified to the point of being (in my opinion) uneventful and lacking in impact. I am sure this book could be used by some preachers to give them ideas of how to design and preach a sermon, but it was not as good as I thought it should have been.
PastorWisconsinAge: 45-54Gender: male5 Stars Out Of 5Great Sourcebook for ministersFebruary 6, 2014PastorWisconsinAge: 45-54Gender: maleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5This is the first time I have gotten a Preacher's Sourcebook of any kind. I am really impressed by this one published by Nelson's and edited by E.S. Hawkins.
It contains sermons and outlines for every week of the year.
I has sermons for special occasions and holidays.
There are full sermons and sermon starters.
Sermons and notes contributors include:
Daniel Akin, Mark Bailey, Matt Carter, Steve Dighton, Dave Epstein, J.D. Greear, Jeff Iorg, James MacDonald, K. and Marshall Williams, Sr.
Articles were written by O.S. Hawkins, Jim Henry, and Steven Smith
Articles include topics on funerals, preparing to preach, preaching the great days of the Christian calendar (New Years, Palm Sunday, Easter, Mother's Day, Father's Day, Independence Day, Sanctity of Life Day, and Christmas Day), weddings, moral and ethical issues, and preaching the gospels.
The books also has a place for your notes and includes and index which makes finding things very easy.
There is also space for "Special Occasion Registries including: Baby dedication, Baptisms, Funerals log, Marriage registration and marriages log, and sermons preached.
Of course I would not only use this book and bypass sermon preparation, but it is nice to have sermon starters. Sometimes getting the idea is the hardest part of sermon preparation. This book could also be used as a commentary to see what other preachers think about a topic or passage of Scripture. What is hardest for me are preaching something new and fresh on the same holidays year after year.
I am looking forward to using this book as a source guide.
I was given this book as part of the BookSneeze blogger program and was not required to write a positive review.
cathyKansasAge: 55-65Gender: female3 Stars Out Of 5Preacher's Sourcebook vol 3January 25, 2014cathyKansasAge: 55-65Gender: femaleQuality: 3Value: 4Meets Expectations: 4Nelson's Annual Preacher's Sourcebook vol 3 edited by O.S. Hawkins. This is a guide for the year of Sunday sermons as well as holiday, funeral and marrage ceremonies. This sourcebook contains quotes, outlines, and illustrations for numerous sermons throughout the year. It also gives helps for difficult times such as weddings gone wrong as well as planning simple weddings to large weddings requiring coordinators. They work through premarital counseling in a discussed though not in much detail on the other had there is a complete ceremony for the wedding. The various authors of the book help with getting through funerals with more than just the sermon but also pastor helps for advising and just being with the family listening to their stories and feelings both during the days leading up to the funeral as well as the days and weeks after. This book recognizes that the leadership of a church is much more than giving a good sermon on Sunday morning. This book assumes that the pastor will be preaching on the Word of God and not just having it be the starting point of the sermon. This book has mostly outlines for the pastors use as ideas and beginning points but some ideas are more fleshed out and complete giving more complex points that could be missed especially by an inexperienced pastor.
I think that this book definately deserves a position on any Christian pastor's book shelf. At 544 pages it certainly is not the only planner that a beginner pastor would need but it certainly would be a help in sermon planning for the year. All sermons contain the personality of the pastor leading the congregation. This book was written by 15 different writers and so has a variety of opinions for delivering a sermon. I would buy it as a good resource for sermon writing and it would be money well spent.
This book was provided by Booksneeze for this review.
mojoTexasAge: 35-44Gender: male5 Stars Out Of 5Great resource for pastorsNovember 27, 2013mojoTexasAge: 35-44Gender: maleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5The Nelson's Annual Preacher Sourecebook is as it sounds, it's a compilation of sermon outlines, as well as inspiration for all the major holidays. This book is packed full at almost 600 pages of essays, funeral and wedding examples, full transcripts and more! Now in it's third volume, each book is edited by O.S. Hawkins who is the former pastor of First Baptist Church in Dallas and is the current president of Guidestone Financial and is the other of over ten books.
Be prepared to receive a book as big as a paper back bible - this book is filled with more information than you could use in a year. In the back there are sample forms, notes, an exhaustive index and essays to read. Each sermon comes written to you from one of 10 authors either current working pastors, or seminary professors or movers-and-shakers in theological circles.
I am always looking for new inspiration when writing sermons and to be honest, I was a little worried to review a "book" since transcribing a bunch of stuff, doesn't really sound fun - GOOD NEWS! The book includes a CD-ROM. Each file is included on the disc in rich text format and is listed alphabetically by author.
I think the best way to use this resource is to skim a few sermons a night before bed and then to jot a few notes down in the upper corner - remind yourself if you'd use it, when you'd use it, what the sermon was about - etc. And then - if you decide to use it, go back to the CD-ROM and pull it up.
This is a great tool - I will certainly be getting volume four when it comes out.
Thank you to Thomas Nelson for this preview copy in exchange for a fair and honest review.

This book was a bit different from most that I have read over and reviewed. Nelson has been publishing these Annual Preacher's Sourcebook for over a decade. Each year it is full of over a year's worth of pastoral resources including:
Sermons, creative outlines, illustrations, and quotes for every week of the year
Worship helps, including hymns, prayers, and Scripture texts
Inspirational thoughts and preaching techniques
Sermons for special occasions and holidays
I was amazed at the range of pastors that had contributed to this volume; pastors like James McDonald, the late Adrian Rogers, Daniel Akin and more. If you are new to ministry or sermon prep, this book is a great resource to see how quality sermons are put together in a broad sense. It also provides some amazing outlines and subject texts for those special occasions like funerals and weddings.
I'm all about commentary and studying of text while preparing to preach a sermon, but the thought of someone directly using other pastors text and outlines verbatim is a bit weird to me. Again, I think it's definitely of benefit to get started or to see another pastor perspective on a given topic and text. Let's just make sure we're all being honest about our sources when standing behind a pulpit and give credit where it's due.
