    Great Bible, Cover Isn't Soft

I love almost everything about this bible. The ONLY thing I do not appreciate is the lack of softens or suppleness in the genuine leather cover. It is stiffer than it should be, which I'm OK with, but the texture of it is quite harsh, not soft like genuine leather should be. I'm very disappointed by that.

One other thing which really bothers me is the horrific toxic fumes emanating from this Bible. It really smells toxic. I am waiting for it to air out, though I have separated all of the pages, which took forever, and will see if I end up with a rash on my hands from it, as I am sensitive to many chemicals.

The pages are nice and crisp, cut properly, the text is nice and clean, and easy to read thanks to the 10pt font. It appears that the guilding is minimal but that's not a big concern of mine. The leather seems okay, no obvious marring or cracks or anything. The inside cover paper is properly glued to the leather creating a nice clean, firm border. There are 5 pages of thick paper (card stock?) on either end of the bible front/back even after the maps in the back, so that is nice to be able to put notes, though I'm not sure regular ballpoint pen will work well on it due to it's glossiness. The maps are of excellent quality, bright, clear, well marked.

The binding is very sturdy, It appears to be Smyth-sewn and it does lie flat when opened to the middle of the bible. Of course the front 1/4 and the back 1/4 of pages won't lie flat but it is very easy to hold it down so that it does.

I don't have a ruler with me, but I can give a hint as to the actual dimensions (for verification purposes):

OK, I have a 2013 NASB MaCarthur Study Bible (the Raven version) and sitting them right on top and matching the left and bottom of them, this reference bible is the same exact width as the study bible. This bible is no more than 1/4 inch (more likely about 1/8 inch) taller. This bible is about 2/3 the thickness of the study bible. It is definitely much lighter than the study bible, making it very easy for me to tote around with me without hand strain, I do have weaker hands due to some autoimmune issues.

This bible includes a nice presentation page, marriages page, Wife's family tree, Husband's family tree pages which include a spot for info about the wife/husband, parents, grandparents, great-grandparents, a births page, deaths page, and last but not least, occasions to remember.

Since I purchased the Large Print edition in genuine leather, my bible is not a red-letter edition. I wish they had that option but I really preferred the large print so I had to choose, large print or red-letter.

The references are in the center column. There is one ribbon marker.

Overall I am quite pleased with this bible. I hope it lasts a lifetime.

Wonderfully Crafted and Sufficient for Any Christian

This is a sturdy Bible and the cover is soft and flexible. I experimented with the cover by folding it and crumpling it in my hands in many different ways, yet it continued to hold it's shape. The Bible opens up very easily, so there's no need to open it up and press down on the spine area to keep it open.

While this probably isn't the best Bible to carry around all the time, it's a wonderful Bible to keep and use at home. However, that might just be my personal preference.

This is a solid Bible, easy to read, excellent font, layout, spacing, size even for those of you that complain about every "large print" being to small. I see criticism of the leather cover: yes it is not at all premium leather but it IS VERY TOUGH. Will take years to break in, but it lays flat almost immediately. I've used this one for a few years now - it wears very well except for one thing: the paper [its a 'thin' Bible] is both very thin and of a type that takes on moisture easily/quickly: if it gets damp from humidity or proximity to steam or shower fog, the pages will QUICKLY pucker. The print ghosting or bleed-through, however, is remarkably slight. not a problem unless you're holding light behind an open page. Bottom line: I'm very picky but this one surprised me to the "upside" - highly readable, AND very portable. Feels good in one hand.

The Lockman Foundation has been producing some affordable and well made NASB (New American Standard Bible) Bibles for quite some time now. The NASB has become known for its excellence in staying true to the original languages. The NASB Ultrathin Reference Bible is no exception. It is bound in genuine leather and is smyth-sewn. A sewn binding makes the Bible more durable and helps it to lay flat as opposed to a glued binding. Pages are folded into groups of pages and stacked, then sewn together. In a glued binding the pages are just cut and glued in the spine. These types are always loosing pages. Sewn bindings are far less apt to fall apart that way.

The Bible has center column references and is a two column format in approximately an 8 point font.

This Bible is almost 9 inches long, 6 inches wide, by almost and inch thick. It is a light bible to carry.

This Bible is light to carry and the pages are pretty thing because it is an Ultrathin. Here is a shot of one page held up to the light.

The page thickness is sufficient and doesn't lend itself to as much show-through as is prevalent in similarly priced ultrathins.

The font is clearly printed and easy to read. There is some room in the margins for limited note taking. This Bible is crammed full of quality and features for the price making it a very good value for the price of around $25.00 depending on where you pick one up.

This Bible is a red-letter addition.

I mentioned that this Bible is a smyth-sewn binding and you can tell from this picture that right out of the box it lies flat on the table.

It would be a bit more supple if it were lined with just vinyl, but this one has card paper covered with vinyl and glued down. It adds more durability to the Bible by making it more rigid, but by no means is it as rigid as a bonded leather binding.

The pages are edge gilded and the spine is gilded as well.

There are some pages in the front that record family info and the like,

One thing I noticed and liked about the construction is where the first and last pages are glued into the lining to stop the Bible from falling apart as easily.

There are also decorative head and foot bands.

The Bible came in a hard cardboard box. The Bible was wrapped in clear plastic.

This Bible also comes with a quite useful concordance which is a surprise for a Bible this thin.

As well as a concordance there are 8 color maps.

There is also on ribbon marker to keep your place. I hope all of the pictures were helpful. Lockman did a good job of making a "users" Bible. This thing is a good value and can take all the punishment of being dragged along where ever you happen to go_ within reason, I mean come on, it isn't water-proof or fire-proof. If you are in the market for an ultrathin and you don't want to spend big bucks for a premium Bible this is the way to go. Again it is genuine leather, and has a sewn binding all for about $25.00! Come on people, that is pretty good.
