I found this book to be an excellent affirmation of God being in COMPLETE control. John Flavel does a superb job explaining from scripture how God is TRULY PROVIDENTIAL over EVERY affair of Earth and its inhabitants.
This is one of the two best books I have read on Providence. I wholeheartedly agree with the previous reviewer and cannot improve on what he says.Let me just say that this book is very warm and edifying reading, written on a level that truly reaches the heart. The fact that this excellent classic is still available 332 years after it was first published ought to tell us something: This book has very well stood the test of time.As for the Providence of God in historical events of the 20th century, I suggest "The Hidden Hand," by Yaakov Astor (a Jewish writer, but one with a profound sense of spiritual awareness). It can be checked out on other websites such as Amazon, Judaica Press Inc., and Soncino Press. Both these books need to be taken very seriously by those who would seek to know the Sovereign Lord better, and acknowledge His rule: both in national and personal events.Returning to Christian writers, I also very strongly suggest The Providence of God in History,h by David Fisher, and Behind a Frowning Providence, by John J. Murray. Both of these are available through CBD.
This is one of the best books I've read, coming at a much needed time in my life. Although no believer can fully understand how God's invisible hand is working in mankind's motions, John Flavel effectively expounds on the important doctrine of God's Providence. In typical thorough Puritan fashion, Flavel takes one verse - Psalm 57:2 "God that performeth all things for me," and, like turning a diamond, examines every facet of this verse using the whole of scripture and history. Flavel writes in a plain spoken style with pastoral warmth, discussing the evidence of Providence and how to meditate on it and apply it. This book helped give me a Biblical framework and perspective on the events of my life, providing comfort in knowing all things are working toward a purposeful end even when I don't understand. In an age of theology that tends to elevate man, this book will pound home the point that God is truly above all things, and is intimately involved in every detail of the Christian's life through His loving, all-wise, and mighty hand!!
