The parallel sister stories make for a gripping read. Though they share some commonalities, they are are also unique so it's like getting two books in one. And yes, this novel can be read as a standalone. There is an ongoing mystery in the present day timeline that carries through each book but the authors do a great job of presenting necessary information from the first book so a new-to-the-series reader won't feel lost at all.
In 21st century Virginia sisters Maddee and Nicole deal with a traumatic incident from the past in very different ways. Maddee leads a contained, organized and structured life while Nicole follows the promptings of her free spirit with disastrous results. There's plenty of angst, unresolved issues and a domineering grandmother that I have a love/hate relationship with. Oh....and romance! Not to mention a decades old mystery that seems to be haunting them still.
Centuries earlier the Talbot's ancestors face their own struggles in the New World. The historical details are riveting. From the voyage across the ocean -- shudder! -- to the duplicity of men dealing with the indentured servants, their story is rife with conflict and danger. These sisters have their own relationship issues to resolve before they can face a future as allies and friends. And, oh yeah, even more romance!
Absorbing right through to the very last page. I can't wait to read My Daughter's Legacy which releases in July of this year.
Jen PenMidwest4 Stars Out Of 5Skillfully written parallel yet perpendicular story...March 10, 2017Jen PenMidwestQuality: 4Value: 4Meets Expectations: 4SUMMARY:
As the second book in the Cousins of the Dove series, My Sister's Prayer continues the Talbot family story, following the story of two sets of sisters-one contemporary and the other historical-separated by 300 years. Told in the first person point-of-view, alternating between present and past, the sisters' lives runindividually yet intertwine through a family heirloom. Romance, sisters, secrets, and hardships divide yet combine the centuries as sisters realize the importance of devotion.
A PENNY FOR MY THOUGHTS:
Liking authors Mindy Starns Clark and Leslie Gould, I was ready to read their combined novel. Though perhaps just a bit confusing in the beginning, it wasn't long before I caught on and sped through the book. (Confession- I did not read book 1, My Brother's Crown, which may have helped my initial confusion.) Skillfully making the first person POV work well within the story, the added design of parallel yet perpendicular stories only enhanced the creativity. With book 3 already on the horizon, I most likely will read the previous novel to be ready for the May 2017 release of My Daughter's Legacy.

The two storylines switch back and forth in a complimentary way, plus they hold a family connection. Sisters Celeste and Berta, Huguenots who had escaped persecution in France, now leave their family in England for America. They find quite the adventure but not what they expected. Maddee and her sister, Nicole, read the letters sent home by their 18th-century relatives. Both sisters lives hold lessons for readers to explore and glean from as they enjoy a well-told story of strife and life. The characters are very realistic, and the authors draw you right into the drama. I recommend all the books by these skillful writers. I received a complimentary copy. All opinions are my own.

She leaves her family in England in stealth to meet her betrothed in the colony of Williamsburg in the year 1704. He is a British soldier and has already left for the colonies, leaving Celeste to make her way on the next ship. What Celeste doesnt know is that her younger sister, Berta, is on the same ship! After a rough sea voyage in which Berta almost dies, they arrive in the colonies. However, in order to pay for their voyage, both women have had to sign indentured servant contracts. The intent is for Celestes betrothed to buy her contract, destroy it and then marry. When the women arrive in Williamsburg, they quickly discover Celestes fianc doesnt have the money to buy their contracts, so they are forced to work as servants. Celeste faces many more trials and comes to depend on Spenser Rawling, who is an apprentice to a local carpenter.
Maddee Talbot and her younger sister Nicole have grown apart in recent years. Nicole has chosen a path of drugs. Maddee is a perfectionist. Nicole is in a serious car accident and comes to recuperate at Grandmother Talbots home. Grandmother is very wealthy and she has certain ideas about how things should be. She hires an attractive physical therapist, Greg, to work one-on-one with Nicole. Nicole is going crazy at her grandmothers and begs her sister to let her finish her recuperation at Maddees house. Maddee agrees as she longs to be close to her sister once again. They also have some old letters from their Talbot ancestors to read, as well as try to make headway on the almost twenty year mystery brought to light over the summer (and covered in book one in the series). There are two strange men hanging around Maddees house. Nicole comes to depend on Greg as he helps Nicole recover.
I thought the parallels between the two sets of sisters and their respective romances were creative. I would recommend reading book one in the series, My Brothers Crown, first as it lays the groundwork for the present day portions of each book. I liked the use of flashback to the Talbots Huguenot heritage. I also appreciated that both elder sisters in the past and the present relied on God and His will, even though they made mistakes and poor choices as we are all prone to do from time to time. Seeing both of the younger sisters realize their poor choices and maturing was also encouraging to read about. The third book in the series, My Daughters Legacy, will be set in the present with flashbacks to the Civil War time period and I cant wait to read that one!
Cynthia5 Stars Out Of 5Beautiful Story of FamilySeptember 29, 2016CynthiaQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5I received this book for an honest review from the author and I found it to be wonderful. I had not read the first book in the series in awhile but I was able to pick up where the last book left off because of reference to the last book and also the strong characters in each of the books. This has to do with the 2 sisters, the older sister has always tried to be perfect because she felt she was the ugly duckling in the family but she grew into herself and has a wonderful career but her confidence about herself is still to when she was younger. Then there is her sister who was always thought of as pretty dealing with her own memories and turned to drugs and almost killed herself in a car accident. Between the surgery and staying at her grandmothers she found reprieve at her sisters even if there were conditions on her staying sober. But grandma has a way to help the girls find their connection again and make it stronger. She shares the letters of 2 sisters that were the start of the family being in America. I so enjoyed how through faith they have found their ways and also make them both stronger and brings the older sister true love.
