Product Description

Media often portrays Muslims as gun-slinging, flag-burning terrorists. But millions of Americans study, work, and live near Muslims today. It's no longer uncommon to hear the names Leila or Mohammed on campus, at a neighborhood park, or in the board meeting. Since September 11, Americans are more curious about the followers of Islam. They know they can no longer afford to be ignorant of such an influential and powerful world religion. This book provides the reader with an insider's view of how North American Muslims think, exposing some of the myths about them, and practical steps on how to establish friendships that can point to Christ.

Publisher's Description

This insider’s view of how North American Muslims think and live goes beyond false stereotypes and provides practical suggestions on how to establish friendships that can point to Christ. Since September 11, 2001, Americans are more curious about the followers of Islam. We can no longer afford to be ignorant of such an influential and historical world religion. Muslims Next Door dispels commonly held myths and helps readers to better understand how Muslims think. Author Shirin Taber comes from a multicultural background and has lived in Iran, France, and Turkey, and now in the United States. Stories of her experiences as well as from interviews with Muslims help readers understand the human side of Islam. Each chapter contains questions for reflection to use in group settings. The book also includes a glossary of Islamic terms.

Fluent in English, French, and Persian, she served for eight years as a university chaplain in Europe and the Middle East. Taber has also authored two multicultural novels, AmericanEyes and Aysha, which show how ethnicity impacts spirituality and relationships.

Editorial Reviews

...a great primer on the Islamic faith and does a good job of dispelling common stereotypes about Muslims. A well-done resource for anyone looking for 'Islam 101,' and it could be useful in prepping a series on relational outreach. -- YouthWorker Journal

Tell us a little about yourself.  I'm thrilled to be a published author.

In addition to my writng work, I am on the board of directors of the DAMAH Film Festival. Please check out our website at www.DAMAH.com. It's a new wave in experimental short films that explore spiritual themes in films. Very cool! there's nothing like it. We'll be at Park City again next year and in LA in Feb. 2005.

What was your motivation behind this project?  I was alarmed when I started hearing talk show radio personalities rant againt Muslims in America. I wanted to help dispell some of the fear and suspicion Americans were feeling toward their Muslim neighbors, co-wokers and fellow students on campus. I hope this book does this in a way that makes North American Muslims appear more approachable.

What do you hope folks will gain from this project?  A love for Muslims. They are some of the most hospitable, warm-blooded people I know in the world.

Who are your influences, sources of inspiration or favorite authors / artists?  My greatest influences have been my multicultural family, my foster parents, mentors through the ministry of Campus Crusade, travel to over 20 nations, my husband and children, reading the classics and multicultural fiction, U2, basketball, homeschooling and living in the Middle East and Europe.

Anything else you'd like readers / listeners to know:  It's all in Muslims Next Door and my two multicultural novels, AmericanEyes and Aysha. My favorite recent book of short stories is Interpretor of Maladies by Jhumpa Lahiri.
