The Phantom ParagrapherTauranga, New ZealandAge: 18-24Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5A great Christian Cozy MysteryJanuary 1, 2012The Phantom ParagrapherTauranga, New ZealandAge: 18-24Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5Wanting a Cozy ( I've decided to adopt the American spelling as to me our way with an "s" just doesn't look right) Mystery to read ? One that will have you guessing the murdered right up to the last page as it seems in the small community of Hum Harbour - everybody is a murder suspect and they all seem to have very good reasons for wanting the deceased to be well Dead.
The story starts with main character Gailynn aka Gai finding the former Doc's boat stuck in the reef, this strikes her as odd since he's supposed to be sailing off into the sunshine for his retirement. Upon closer inspection, Gai discovers the Doc dead and soon his death has been ruled from accident to homicide . Who wanted the Doc dead ? As Gai seems to be the only one that cared about the Doc , she decides to get to the bottom of it - but it seems that the only way for her to actually get towards the truth of what happened is to delve deeper into the business of the community of Hum Harbour and it seems like everybody has something to hide from financial troubles to unfaithful husbands to law suits. Soon Gai will realise that the people she loved or trusted are not what they seem and what will happen when she discovers the two people she loved most in the world are the ones that she should be scared or worried about rather than the rest of the residents of Hum Harbour ? So, readers in order to find out who killed the Doc, you will have to turn the pages of this fast-paced thriller "Murder in Hum Harbour". A mystery that you won't want to or be able to for a better word , put down.
Janet SketchleyCanadaAge: 45-54Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5A fun read - Canadian settingOctober 3, 2011Janet SketchleyCanadaAge: 45-54Gender: femaleQuality: 4Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5This is a short romantic suspense, perhaps a little longer than a Love Inspired book. As such, there's not a lot of room for multiple plot lines. Both the mystery and the romance work well, and I like the author's touches of humour (Cousin Mimi names her Daschunds Oscar, Meyer and Frank).
Canadian author Jayne E. Self does a fine job of bringing the characters of the small, coastal town of Hum Harbour to life, and she absolutely nails the feel of the setting.
The novel is told first-person from Gailynn's point of view, and she's an enjoyable narrator. She's impulsive, independent, and in over her head with this mystery.
I look forward to reading the next novel in the Seaglass Mysteries series, to see what misadventures Gailynn gets herself into but also to see how things work out for some of the other inhabitants of the town.
