juliea2 Stars Out Of 5great Bible passages, questionable reflectionsApril 28, 2011julieaQuality: 2Value: 2Meets Expectations: 2Because I had so enjoyed Understanding Jesus (Joe Amaral), I was looking forward to reviewing another book by the same publisher. I got that chance with The 365 Most Important Bible Passages for Women.
Bible Passages for Women is a year-long devotional for "becoming the woman God created you to be." The Bible passages and stories that were selected for this devotional were well chosen. The selection was incredibly diverse, covering some of the more common stories, of course, but adding many passages I was only marginally familiar with. It was a great opportunity to get to know more of the Bible, and more deeply.
If the author had stopped at simply compiling these passages, I would have no hesitation about recommending this book. However, a related reflection was added to each passage, and this is where the book took a misguided turn.
Why were these reflections a concern? Well, nowhere in the book can I find anything about the author's credentials. I prefer to have a lot more background information on the person directing my Bible reflection. For example, was this written by a pastor? A parent? The average gal down the street? How do I know this author's spiritual guidance is sound? So many of the reflections read like they're just an average gal's passing thought on the topic for the day that, without further knowledge of the author, I can't give consideration to her guidance. In a few instances, the reflection seemed almost dangerous (e.g., a potentially unqualified person discussing how rape should be dealt with).
With so many other options out there, this would not be a book I would recommend.
I received this book free from Hachette Book Group for the purpose of providing my honest review.
BrendaWVAge: 35-44Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5Nicely writtenApril 26, 2011BrendaWVAge: 35-44Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5"The 365 Most Important Bible Passages For Women" is a wonderful devotional and quite honestly one of the best that I have ever used. It is scripturally sound with Bible passages that are specifically target women. It is written in a straightforward way that is easy to understand.
While it can be read as a daily devotional I liked the fact that the table of contents break the book down into eight major topics such as significance, relationships and communications, understanding men, choices, stress and community, beauty and health, hope and commitment, and faith and love, which allowed me to choose my reading based on specific information that I was looking for. Another great thing about this book is the fact that the dates in the book don't correspond with specific days, allowing you to use this book in any year.
The cover of the book is beautiful, reminding me of spring renewal, while the inside provides uplifting and insightful lessons perfect for enhancing your spiritual walk.
This book would make an excellent addition for any one's library, and I think it would make a fantastic Mothers Day gift.
