It is clear that this plot parallels the life of Jesus Christ's on earth. Jonathan gives life through his blood and promises to usher in his new kingdom with the Mortals in it, reminding Christian readers of God's redeeming blood. "Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day" (John 6:54 NIV). This parallel is further advanced by the fact that Jonathan, though perhaps the most important character, is never the narrator. Other characters like Rom Sebastian, leader of the Mortals, and Roland, prince of the Nomads, view Jonathan from a distance. His words are wise and his actions confuse these two men many times, but still they follow him, just as Jesus' disciples followed Him without question. This clever tactic allows the reader to view Jonathan with just as much reverence as his followers.
These Mortals are powerful warriors with better sight and reflexes, and the intense battle sequences are marvelously and meticulously detailed, allowing the reader to picture the scenes with clarity. Mortals see the world through perfect eyes, and Rom's and Roland's rich descriptions provide startling passages throughout the book.
Jonathan is enigmatic throughout the story, leaving his followers confused and worried about his state of mind. Sadly, though, little time is spent with Jonathan in the story. Many pages are devoted to Rom and Roland planning ways to ensure Jonathan's ascension to Sovereign, and readers may feel they are attending boring tactical meetings for many pages. The dialogue is stiff, and though the fictional world leaps off the pages, the characters remain flat.
Dekker and Lee successfully create an imaginative world in Mortal but leave the characters predictable, except for Jonathan. Teenage boys will love the detailed battle sequences and Christian teens will find comfort in the familiar parallel to Christ's redeeming blood. - Donna Menke, www.ChristianBookPreviews.com
