Much of his teaching was gathered in various writings. One of the most famous of Spurgeon's published works was the devotional entitled Morning and Evening. The format of Morning and Evening is what the title leads the reader to believe: two devotions for every day of the year, one to be read in the morning and the other to be read in the evening. Mornings and Evenings with Spurgeon is an update of Spurgeon's classic devotional by Larry and Marion Pierce. The update revises the King James Version quotations of the Scriptures with more contemporary translations. Mornings and Evenings with Spurgeon also updates some of Spurgeon's language that sounds overly Victorian so that the modern reader can more readily relate to his words. Larry and Marion Pierce do well in their update of this classic devotional, and I believe it strikes a good balance of being faithful to Spurgeon and connecting to their audience.
The changes to Spurgeon's language are conservative, and they serve to make him sound more down to earth and less stuffy. One simple example of this is the evening devotion for February 8. The original text started with the words "Many persons." The new version uses the very subtle change "many people." Just that little change makes Spurgeon sound much more conversational to his readers, which was his original intent.
There are some further improvements that this text could use. It would be nice to have page numbers in the book. Also, there is no credit to a separate translation or to the editors regarding the changes to the King James Version that was made. These improvements could make Mornings and Evenings with Spurgeon even more useful.
All in all, Larry and Marion Pierce have done well. They have brought some needed updates to a classic devotional. Perhaps the greatest compliment I could give the editors is that if Spurgeon read their update, he would approve. And, he would. Clint Walker, www.ChristianBookPreviews.com
Mrs. W.5 Stars Out Of 5Excellent Tool for DevotionsFebruary 3, 2011Mrs. W.Quality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5The beautiful, paperback book is an excellent tool for daily devotions. Inside you will find dated entries, with one page for the morning entry and another page for the evening's entry. This can be re-read year after year, after year.
There is a short Bible verse at the top of each page. Each devotion is only one page long, making it pleasant to read and enjoy.
This book is from the original Charles Spurgeon book, but lightly edited for ease of reading. The beautiful pages will stir you to a closer walk with the Lord.

While Spurgeon wrote more than a hundred years ago, his truths are still very relevent today and this book has updated the language to make it easily understood. As I have read, I have posted selections on my blog that have been deeply moving to me, and have been amazed at how many readers were also inspired by Spurgeons words as deeply as I was. I highly recommend this devotional!
I do wish that the pages were a little thicker and more sturdy, but I can understand the publisher was trying to squeeze a lot material into one book.
"Oh that a hallowed time of divine communion may be given to me this evening! The Lord knows I need it very greatly. My graces languish, my corruptions rage, my faith is weak, my devotion cold; all these reasons His healing hand should be laid upon me."

Mornings & Evening with Spurgeon is a classical devotional book written by Charles Spurgeon, just in an updated contemporary style! ú With two devotions for every day of the year, a believer can spend five minutes morning and evening to develop their faith deeper.
This updated version contains a modernized language of Spurgeonáæs original words. In the original "Mornings & Evenings" Spurgeon, references the KJV and this new updated version uses a Modern English Style. Each day contains a daily reading suggestion (to read through the Bible in a year), two devotions for each day and a reference bible verse for each devotion.
Although I was not able to read this entire devotional in order to review, I did take the time to skim the March 21st through April 24th morning devotions as those are Charles Spurgeon's motivating meditations on Christ's death. WOW! These are powerful messages to reflect upon during the Lenten and Easter season!
I would highly recommend this new version to today's generation. It is a compact book with thin pages! Very nice to accompany your bible!
I would give this book 5 out of 5.
