Although I guess it could have been read alone, I found it to be a very direct continuation of "A Sensible Arrangement," following Marty and Jake as much or more than Alice and Robert, who were apparently the main characters. They seemed more of a secondary couple to the original storyline, which is fine for a series, although unexpected from the back cover description. I also found it rather slow going to begin with - lots of preliminary story lines and details. However, I did enjoy reading Alice and Robert's story once it got going, and will enjoy tying up the loose ends in the series finale.

Alice is such a kind and likeable character. She truly tries to be nice to everyone and does not want to cause problems for anybody. As she begins to have feelings for Robert, she doubts that he would ever be truly attracted to her.
Robert Barnett is a strong and handsome hero, who sees past what is on the outside and is immediately drawn to Alice. But, everyone expects Robert to wed his childhood friend, Jessica. Robert must search his heart and discern what God wants for him.
Alice and Robert are such great characters. The attraction and gentle romance between them is wonderful. I also really enjoyed that the story contains a lot of Marty and Jake, from the first book. It is so nice to see what is going on in their lives. Their relationship continues to grow and thrive, after a shaky start, through this book.
I highly recommend this series to fans of historical fiction and I have since realized that this series is linked to an earlier series that Tracie Peterson wrote called Land of the Lone Star. Now I look forward to reading that series as well.

The book tells the story of Alice Chesterfield, a shy young woman who is haunted by her past. The book also tells the continued story of Marty and Jacob Wythe (their story continues from the first book in the series, A Sensible Arrangement). We find out that Alice worked for Marty as her maid and through the passage of time has now become close friends. The economic crisis forces Marty and Jacob to move from Colorado to Texas, where Marty is reticent to go. Alice goes with them and finds family, love, and healing.
I truly enjoyed reading this book. Tracie Peterson writes such beautiful characters and describes great scenery that transports you to a different time and into beloved characters' lives. After I finished reading this book, I felt that it was a must to read the first book because I wanted to further appreciate the growth of these characters. Overall, this book depicts the beauty of the love of a family, friendship, healing, and God's steadfast love.
