Andrew Greeley, from the Foreword
When Ministry Is Messy: Practical Solutions to Difficult Problems addresses the three major causes of conflict within parish ministrynatural personality differences, emotional illness and sin. With the help of Scripture, namely Matthew 23, and modern psychology, Dr. Brown offers solutions to conflicts so that pastoral ministers can free themselves from fear and anxiety in their daily work and bring peace to church ministries. Drawing from his extensive background in both psychology and ministry, Dr. Brown provides effective solutions that are both practical and spiritual.

Tell us a little about yourself. My background includes 25 years of counseling experience, 10 years as Marianist Brother, employment as Adult Faith Formation Director. Degrees include a doctorate and Masters degrees in counseling, education and pastoral theology.
What was your motivation behind this project? I was motivated by my observation of irrational firings of capable ministry leaders and my own experiences of ministry conflict. I also wanted to do staff training seminars on this topic, now available at 1(800)542-1412.
What do you hope folks will gain from this project? Church staff and volunteer leaders will come to understand the three major causes of conflict and the four primary solutions that Jesus used in ministry conflict.
Who are your influences, sources of inspiration or favorite authors / artists? One of my favorite authors is Father Andrew Greeley, who wrote the Foreword for this book. Robert Greenleaf's works on servant leadership have also been an influence.
Anything else you'd like readers / listeners to know: The three causes of conflict: natural personality differences, emotional illness and sin. Solutions of Jesus: loving servanthood, forgiveness, use of the intellect and speaking out: each resolves each of the three causes.
