In her long-awaited new book, Sheila Walsh equips women with a practical method for connecting with God’s strength in the midst of struggle. From daily frustrations that can feel like overwhelming obstacles to hard challenges that turn into rock-bottom crises, women will find the means to equip themselves for standing strong with God. The Middle of the Mess is insightful, informative, and filled with the perfect blend of real talk and vulnerability.

Walsh excels in her gentle combination of story and reflection. Her ability to bring life to her words by letting the stories take their time to ebb and flow adds depth that only an experienced storyteller can bring.

I spend a lot of time with my nose buried in psychology and self-help books (counselling classes tend to do that to a person) but the most impactful are always the ones where the author weaves together heart with truth, a mix Walsh has mastered.Walsh has walked through the darkest of valleys and calls out to readers from a place of familiarity not superiority. I loved this as it makes the book relatable and referable. Let's face it, everyone today is touched by mental health. It's also probably one of the more stigmatized categories of illness. Walsh's book seeks to battle the stigma with information, heart, and humanity, the best weapons.

Obviously, for those familiar with Walsh's career the presence of a strong faith/theological component will come as no surprise. While there are no startling revelations in her material such as the importance of community, the journey of salvation, God's desire in our lives - the straightforwardness with which she pairs these truths with the realities facing those battling mental illness is encouraging and a great resource for those in the middle of such a battle or supporting someone who is.

    4.5 out of 5 stars.

I recently started reading In the Middle of the Mess by Sheila Walsh. This book is not for the faint of heart. The opening chapter of the book is a letter from Sheila to her dad, it's full of emotions and darkness. For those who don't know, Sheila Walsh has battled with depression and thoughts of suicide for her entire life. She is very open about her struggles but also gives hope in knowing the goodness of God. I started this post by saying "I recently started reading...". This book at this time in my life is a little bit too intense on the emotional side. I was hoping for something just encouraging, but this book is much more than that. It was too sad for me and I struggled to read it. It may help other people who are struggling with some difficult situations in their life, but it wasn't the right book for me.

I am really thankful I stumbled across this book, offered for review through Thomas Nelson's Booklook Bloggers program. In the Middle of the Mess: Strength for This Beautiful, Broken Life by Sheila Walsh is one of the most tenderhearted, insightful, and encouraging books I've ever read. Walsh not only shares her story, her struggle, but deeply desires to help other women move forward triumphantly by God's Spirit in their stories, too. As she says on page 15, "This is the invitation of this book - an invitation to find healing, to find strength in the middle of your mess . . . It's a book about confession, about letting go, about picking up the Word of God, which was fashioned for your own personal war with your own personal demonds. This is a book intended to give you strength."

If life feels hard right now and you find yourself struggling to put one foot in front of the other each day, Walsh wrote this book for you. If you aren't struggling right now, this book can give you a deeper understanding into the hearts of those who are, so you can approach with a little more empathy, more sensitivity, deeper understanding.

I have enjoyed reading this book and know that it's one I'll read again, probably several times. I want to absorb every thought; I recommend this to you.

I first want to thank Sheila for being so transparent in order to help others. Not many would bare themselves as she did in her testimony. How necessary it is, as Christians, to come along side others. To allow God to speak through us and use us as His Hands and Feet and heart. She has used this book to come along probably thousands and I know she will never know how she has touched them and given them Hope. God Bless her for sharing His Gospel in a very special way.

This was an excellent review of my own life, which helped me to come to grips with so many issues. Thanks to Sheila Walsh for helping those of us with spiritual, mental, and emotional pain. An excellent read for husbands who don't understand why their wives behave the way they do, and to reunite a marriage that has been broken by emotional trauma.
