Product Description

In Messed Up Men of the Bible, Tina and Dave Samples remind us that the Bible is filled with a cast of men who struggled and fell, and yet were consistently used by God to accomplish His purposes. These historic men faced the same emotions and questions that contemporary men face. Through their lives, we can see just how God's power is perfected in our weakness--then and now. Personal stories, practical advice, and useful exercises offer encouragement and hope for women dealing with the imperfect men in their own lives. Includes study questions for personal or group use.

I liked this book simply because of the title. It is a book that does exactly what the name suggests and tells us about men from the Bible that were far from perfect. They struggled with many of the same things that men today struggle with. Still, God used those men for His purposes. This is a book written about men but it is geared toward women.

I liked that it made men's flaws that women might complain about less of an issue. That isn't to say that they aren't still issues but it was more of how to help and encourage instead of nag and annoy. The men in our lives aren't perfect and may be really messed up but God can still use them and we can still be helpmates to them. I liked that it was a positive outlook on the whole thing!

It was a 5/5 for me. I'm keeping it as a reminder.

Thank you to the publisher for the review copy of this book (via bookfun magazine). I received this book in exchange for an honest review and the opinions stated above are 100% mine.

Messed Up Men of the Bible - Seeing the Men in Your Life Through God's Eyes, is written by authors Tina and Dave Samples to encourage not just women but also men. It is an 176 page Christian Living, Relationship help book penned about a dozen men from the Bible that were very different. Each man lived in a different time, had different issues and experiences, but God used each one. Some men were contrary, depressed, adulterous, controlling, had tempers, lacked faith, were proud and pursued by Satan.

Women will find this book insightful. The authors state it is book about living with your messed up man and joining God in getting your man to where God wants him. It is a book about loving and praying for your man and trusting God. Some issues or traits will sound familiar. Others may not. This would definitely be an encouraging book for men. It gives them peace and hope. God is the God of redemption and second chances. And third chances and more. He can use all things for His good, even Messed up Men that go back as far as biblical times. King David was far from perfect but God used him. Time and again God forgave David and lead him when David turned his heart back to God. God used him and his son, Solomon. The authors authors use these men of the Bible that are flawed and relate them to men of today that live in our lives. They point out what we already should know. "God's strength is perfect when our strength is gone. Nothing is impossible with God."

Through personal experiences and stories the Samples make this an interesting, helpful book. It is written by both of them so there is a woman's point of view as well as a man's. It would make a great couples small group study or one for a women's or men's group. Each chapter has questions at the end of it. Anyone wanting to deepen their Walk would enjoy this book. I would definitely recommend this book and rated it a 4 out of 5 stars. I received a copy of this book from The Book Club Network for my honest review.

I read Tina's Wounded Women of the Bible and really enjoyed it so I was excited to see her husband and her come together to write this book.

I love that they take several people from the Bible, people who you might not even think about at first as "messed up" and point out their flaws and how God used that and helped them to overcome and how as women we can help our men overcome their obstacles and be a support to them.

It is interesting that this book is addressed to women instead of men looking to overcome their "messed up-ness". The first book was addressed to the messed up woman not their man. I think this is done because, honestly, my husband isn't a reader and will never read a book like this. But I would read it to help our relationship. I think that is the case for most men.

If you have a husband that has some issues (and who doesn't) you will probably find this book insightful and interesting.

A copy of this book was given to me through The Book Club Network Inc. in exchange for an honest review.

Messed up Men of the Bible Tina and Dave Samples

This is an excellent read, to remind us 1. no one is perfect, not even some of the most well known, most used men of the Bible 2. How we can help the man in our lives, and it's not always about them. Sometimes there are steps we need to take, or not take in the situation 3. Married or not, there are definitely some good ideas that can be used in our relationships.

Each messed up man has his own chapter, with what we can learn from his life and actions, reactions. The chapters all begin with a quote by a well known person or Bible verse as well as a theme for each one and end by giving us thought provoking questions and ideas on how to move pass the mess. Tina and Dave will also share from their own life experiences which help to make the teaching more concrete, tested and proved.

Peter was double minded, he lacked authenticity and changed with the situation, causing confusion. In this chapter we will read of six signs that might show lack of authenticity as well as tools for helping.

Nebuchadnezzar was conceited, so sure he was number one. Pride had got the better of him. So what can we do? There are steps listed in here that we can use, while God works on our man. Remember, it's God's job to change him, not ours.

As we can learn from Nebuchadnezzar's story: "Notice the sequence here. First, Nebuchadnezzar looked to heaven, second, his sanity returned; third, he worshiped God. He had eaten grass for seven years before he looked up. Could he have looked up earlier and saved himself some grief? I want to think so. But the good news is that God continuously waits for us to raise our eyes toward heaven." pg. 38

There are chapters on all kinds of issues:

    1. Control freaks including 10 signs of, how waiting is really about trust, along with a great explanation of what trust really is: "Totally rely on God Refuse to act without God's direction Unconditionally obey God's plan Submit to God's control Take God's timing" pg 46

    2. Anger issues

"..But believers struggle with anger too. The wisest and most scholarly struggle as well. Even those called 'friend of God' struggle with anger...." pg 59 So how do we deal with this angry man? Again something easy to remember: "Remain calm Empathize Listen Act to uphold your boundaries X-amine your role" pg. 63

And so many more: pain and suffering, depression, encouraging the spiritual leader in your household, false friends and still more. But I can't tell you everything you have to pick up this great book and read it for yourself. There is so much in here, to read, to learn, to put into action. Why not pick it up today and see if you don't agree.

Let me leave you with another of my favorite quotes from this book:

"May God give you the courage to encourage and may He pour His blessings on those you bless with your words, expressions and hand. And may God bless you with abundant love for the men in your life." pg 135

Thank you to the authors, and to bookfun.org for the opportunity to read and review this book. It is definitely a keeper!!

When I started reading this book, I wasn't really sure what to expect. I kind of figured it was written for men, but boy, was I surprised to find out it was more about loving your messed up man. Tina and her husband Dave alternate writing about each man they have selected to include in the book. Each author giving a different perspective to think about.

The men vary from saved to unsaved, simple to mighty, good to bad. I learned so much from this book about the way men think, what encourages them, why they do the things they do, and how their actions affect us as women. But not just that, I also learned how we, as women, can help them, encourage them, uplift them. When we need to take action, or step back and pray. Many of the things I read about definitely applied to my life.

One of the first things Tina says is "Relationships can be messy and difficult, especially when you're living with a messed up man. Trying to maneuver through life without losing your mind can feel overwhelming." Dave says, "This is not a book on how to fix your messed up man. It's bigger than that. This is a book about how to join God in His mission of transforming your man to fit into God's perfect plan and place."

Men would most likely benefit from reading this book also, but I would say it is more written for women. Some of the men discussed in this book include: Peter - a double minded man, Nebuchadnezzar - Prideful, Saul - Reckless, Moses - Angry, Job - sick, and more. Many of these men started out passionate about God, only to get sidetracked. Most of them returned to God's ways, recognized their weakness, and held on to the faith. Some did not. Not all of their wives are mentioned in the Bible, but there is still much to learn, speculation and Tina does an amazing job of imagining what it would be like to have been married to some of these men. She also uses her own personal experiences to drawn home a point. This is a very eye opening and useful resource for personal or group use. Each chapter also includes discussion questions. A note of caution though, if used in a group setting, this book should be used to grow women into better knowing how to love and pray for their men, not as a tool to point out their sins and wrong doings. I believe the authors wrote this book for the purpose of edification. Tina is quick to establish that many times we as women are not edifying our men and building them up as we should. Our men need prayer warrior wives.
