Product Description

In the books of Ezra and Nehemiah, we have two first-person accounts of Israel's return from exile to the Promised Land. In this winsome Bible study, with questions for group reflection at the end of each chapter, the author helps us understand that these are not records of historic feats, but rather the confessions of a humble prodigal on a profoundly spiritual journey home.

Publisher's Description

In his introduction, author Gerald Bilkes explains, "Few people realize that the magnificent New Testament narrative of repentance and forgiveness is etched into the fabric of the whole Bible, and not least of all into those books that concern Israel's return from exile." In this winsome Bible study, with questions for individual or group reflection at the end of each chapter, the author introduces readers to the little-known Old Testament books of Ezra and Nehemiah and demonstrates that they are an expanded version of the story of the prodigal son, preaching the same message of conversion. With pastoral warmth, Bilkes guides his readers home through the memoirs of a prodigal people returning to their God.

History is fascinating to me. It is even more gripping when I can read someone's memoirs from that time period. Biographies are great but journals let you see the heart of the people writing them. I had never thought of the books of Ezra and Nehemiah this way before. Gerald Bilkes in the title of his book gave me a new way to view these often overlooked books in the Bible.

As Dr. Bilkes walks us through the books of Ezra and Nehemiah, we see a picture of repentance, restoration, and revival. You can see this process in the table of contents:

    Introduction: A Prodigal People

    Part One: Ezra

    The Lord Is First

    Awakening Mercy

    Tokens of Mercy

    Adversaries, Subtle and Severe

    Fresh Courage through the Word

    Joy through God

    A Further Reformation

    A Fresh Exodus

    A Time for Brokenness

    Breaking with Sin

    Part Two: Nehemiah

On His Knees before the Court of Heaven

    From Burden to Boasting

Submitting to the Yoke of God

    The Crucible of Conflict

    A Redeemer Comes to Zion

    A Fearless Leader

    We Have a Strong City

    A Fresh Sinai

    The Prayer of Returning Prodigals

    Biblical Covenanters

    The Holy City

    Looking Back in Wonder

    Cleansed!

Appendix 1: Lessons for Ministry from Ezra

Appendix 2: Lessons for Prayer from Nehemiah

This book is composed of short, pithy chapters that are both easy to read and full of application. At the end of each chapter is a list of questions that makes this book easily adaptable for small group studies. I read this book over the course of a month, during my lunch breaks at work. The book is small in size making it easy to carry. The chapters took about 10 to 15 minutes to read. I only read one chapter a day to give me time to reflect on the content.

Dr. Bilkes is an excellent tour guide through the books of Ezra and Nehemiah. I hope he writes in a similar fashion on more books in the Bible. I enjoyed this book and would recommend it to anyone who wants to study these biblical authors or for anyone who longs for revival in their own life or for anyone seeking a good devotional read. Thank you Dr. Bilkes and Reformation Heritage Books for your commitment to help those of us on our spiritual pilgrimage.

There are several things I want to point out about this book in this review:

First, to those who have already assumed this is a devotional book from other reviewers, I want to say: if you think of devotionals as 'Our Daily Bread' then stop right here and go home. Proceed no further because you'll be overwhelmed. It's not because Memoirs is too deep to comprehend; it's just that you'll choke on the meat of the Word of God presented in this book rather than the milk you've been accustomed to receiving. [This is not a knock against Our Daily Bread; it's more against the mindset that says, 'All I need in devoting myself to God every day is five minutes from one verse of Scripture, a nice illustrative story and a pithy little quote at the end.']

Second, this is not a commentary on the books of Ezra and Nehemiah, not in the technical sense of the word. It is a delightful exposition of these two Old Testament books, taking the reader from the lives lived so long before Christ and displaying how Christ is still right there for them, as the Promise of God. Prof. Bilkes provides questions at the end of each chapter which may be used in a Bible study format, but I think one will still do better if he reads and works hard to draw more out of observation and interpretation using Memoirs to aid him. The questions provided help deepen the understanding of that gleaning and then bring some measure of application home to the reader/student.

Third, if you're a Bible college/seminary student or a pastor, the final two chapters will be a marvelous summary of the book and motivation for using Ezra and Nehemiah again and again for point of reference for you and life and ministry. This is not to say that the final two chapters (see the contents listing above) are not for the 'average' reader; they certainly are. As a pastor, however, I was delighted and moved to read these final portions and be charged with deepening my ministry, even after 28+ years of it. And goodness knows, I can always use help and encouragement for my prayer life.

This is a book I can highly commend to you.
