Product Description

While paying careful attention to a commentary's traditional interest in the structure, backgrounds, and grammar of the text, Doriani also supplies the theological commentary, Christ-centered focus, and personal and corporate applications that pastors and teachers need. Each chapter attends to Matthew's original intent and seeks to express that intent in ways that evoke his distinct voice, so as to fulfill the goal of Matthew's gospel-making disciples by forming the mind, heart, and hands of believers.

About The Reformed Expository Commentary Series:

The Reformed Expository Commentary focuses on the English rendering of the biblical text, and thus does not address concerns of the original language nor academic technicalities. Rather, proceeding section-by-section it focuses on the narrative flow of the biblical book, while drawing out significant points or theological emphases in the text, and then applies them to the daily life of the Christian.

br/>The various points addressed range between historical events taking place within a books narrative, or upon significant doctrinal statements that are made. The application or "guidance" section as the series calls it rounds out each of the particular emphases from the text making it a complete expository volume. Each commentary approaches the text from a Reformed theological perspective, and can be used profitably for either study or devotion.

Major Perspectives:

  • Scripture: Inerrant & Revealed
  • Theology: Traditional/Conservative Reformed
  • Wider Tradition: Protestant/Evangelical
  • Audience: Pastors/Laity
  • Uses: Scripture Study, General Reading, Devotional

Editorial Reviews

The mature fruit that is produced through years of ministry in the academy and the church is found in this volume. Readers will surely harvest an abundance of exegetical, theological, and practical insights for Christian life and ministry. This commentary is a must read for all who study the Gospel of Matthew. -- Mark Futato

This is not a standard commentary. It is Matthew taught vividly as God's word. Doriani deploys the fruit of wide reading, lively imagination, pastoral savvy, deep learning, native wit, and personal commitment. He draws the reader into the history of Matthew's day. He draws out the teaching, commands, wisdom, and saving work of Jesus the Son of God. If more preaching were like this, Christian faith and life in congregations of all backgrounds and sizes would benefit greatly. And more of the lost would join the ranks of Jesus' disciples—the great goal of this great Gospel. -- Robert W. Yarbrough, associate professor of New Testament, New Testament department chair, Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, Deerfield, IL

Oh the joy of reading a commentary with the roots of an informed mind and the wings of an enflamed heart! Dan Doriani’s two volume exposition of Matthew, in the REC series, is as refreshing as it is well researched. But that is just what I would expect from one of the finest pastor-scholars in the evangelical world. Dan’s keen understanding of the gospel of the kingdom and his great love for the gospel of God’s grace permeate this faithful and practical presentation of the person and work of Jesus according to Matthew. What a great gift for pastor and parishioner alike! -- Scotty Smith, Pastor for Preaching, Teaching and Worship, Christ Community Church
