Product Description

This commentary includes a major introduction, translation and verse-by-verse commentary. W.D.Davies explores the multiplicity of genres in Matthew that call for flexibility in method and aim, and uses the more traditional historical-critical approach. According to the author this is the best approach since the text of Matthew makes the indisputable assumption that behind it and the community within which and to which its author wrote stand the life, death, and resurrection of an actual person, Jesus of Nazareth. This is a scholarly work.

Publisher's Description

'How should this massive work of scholarship be assessed? The three volumes stand as one of the major commentaries on the Gospel of Matthew in which all future interpreters of the Gospel will find a source of fruitful dialogue and helpful ideas. It is a "must have," both in libraries and in footnotes. Davies and Allison are to be thoroughly commended on the fruits of their considerable toil.' Robert K. McIver, Seminary Studies>

I've already reviewed other forms of this (hardcover, soft cover, individual volumes, the three volumes together), so I won't repeat it here. I've read the entire introduction and used this commentary for the birth narratives and the Sermon on the Mount. The introduction was magnificent. I had to keep reminding myself that I wasn't reading the work of an evangelical. Davies and Allison are theological moderates (in my estimation), but those of a conservative bent have nothing to fear from their extensive introduction. Their handling of the relationship between the synoptics is excellent. They support Markan priority with a very strong case. The fact that they are not conservative shows up in the birth narratives, so don't let that phase you. Overall their treatment of Matthew is extremely well done and if you can afford this, get the set. When I check several commentaries, I always leave theirs for last because I usually get a very good treatment of the questions I'm asking. Occasionally, they seem to fall flat, but not too often. Also, there's an ad nauseum degree of coverage of literary analysis, but you can easily read around it. Their coverage of the Sermon on the Mount is super.
