Matt's adventures begin one afternoon while browsing through some musty books in an obscure, neglected corner of his middle school library. One book titled Ian's Flute literally demands his attention. Surprisingly, the book contains a nondescript title page followed by one blank page after another. While quizzically leafing through the blank pages, Matt unearths a portal into time travel and is suddenly introduced to a series of wild adventures filled with danger, mystery, and intrigue. As a result, Matterhorn and his friends travel around the globe and off it. Their adventures take them under the Earth and over the moon. Not bad for kids who don't even have driver's licenses! Read The Sword and the Flute and join Matterhorn the Brave in his early voyages that transcend space and time. Recommended for ages 9 to 12.

Mike Hamel's Matterhorn, the Brave
Adventure, Danger, and Inspiration
Matthew Horn (a.k.a. Matterhorn) is a brave knight-when he isn't busy being a typical twelve-year-old boy. Few people have heard of him, which isn't surprising, for most of his adventures happen in other times and places. And like all who know how to travel, he can do so without drawing attention to himself.

The Sword and the Flute is volume 1 in the new Matterhorn the Brave series.
MIKE HAMEL has authored several books, and his articles appear in national magazines, including Focus on the Family. The saga of Mattherhorn the Brave" and his friends originated as bedtime stories Mike shared with his four children, who are now grown. He lives with his wife Susan in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
The first book in the Matterhorn the Brave series, The Sword and the Flute features a middle school kid who likes to read history. One day while searching the library shelves, Matt finds a book titled The Sword and the Flute. Daunted by the number of pages, he decides not to read it. But when he tries to put it back in its slot on the shelf, it wont go in. Intrigued, he opens the book. Inside are only blank pages except for a curious black dot found on a middle page. Staring at the black dot, Matterhorn is sucked into another world.
Matterhorns quest includes a jeweled queen, a fun sidekick, a mysterious stranger, and a deceiving enemy. Is Matterhorn the promised chosen one who can save the forest and this strange world?
Author Mike Hamel wrote this fantasy for youth. Tales of Matterhorn the Brave were originally bedtime stories Hamel told to his four children. Edited by innovative editors Dan Penwell and Rick Steele, The Sword and the Flute is a good choice for boys and reluctant readers like myself who prefer stories with lots of action. bookworm5 Stars Out Of 5review by 12 year oldJanuary 9, 2017bookwormQuality: 0Value: 0Meets Expectations: 0When you read, do you ever stop to think, someone actually wrote this? I know that I do and it amazes me that someone can take some key idea or thought and make it into a story.
For Mike Hamel, it was his childrens persistence at bedtime to tell them stories that lead to the creation of the Matterhorn Series.
Who knows how many times he told those stories to his ow children before he had time to write them down, but I am so glad that he took the time because now all kids can experience these same adventurous stories that his own children enjoyed! I am also so pleased he published his stories because I relish the excitement and humor within each story and I also appreciate the quirkiness of the characters.
There are many pros and the cons are few, in fact there is only one con. The pros are when you read the Matterhorn series the stories seem to come alive before your very eyes. I can almost feel what the characters are feeling and see in my minds eye, exactly what they are seeing, even the most thrilling and chilling parts of each book! When reading his books, I have a clear picture of what is going on, but he has left enough gaps in each story to let me exercise my own imagination. Now for the one con. The Book of Stories, the eight book, completes the whole series for which I am sad because I would love to have this series last forever.
I am 12 years old and I have read a lot of books, but Mike Hamels Matterhorn the Brave series is one of my favorites! I would recommend these books for both boys and girls age pre-teen to adult. I also think the series would be great to use in small groups or as part of a bookclub as they go deeper than just adventure, time-travel and mystery. There is also focus on what is happening in the minds of the characters and how they deal with and overcome their trials. The books also show the natural consequences for poor decisions. I love these stories and believe all kids should have the opportunity to read these fantastic books!!!
Dr. Gorka5 Stars Out Of 5Metaphorically MarvelousNovember 15, 2016Dr. GorkaQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5"Matterhorn the Brave" is a boldly assertive fantasy series that is firmly rooted in a spiritual realm with a Christian ethos that is as cleverly crafted as "The Chronicles of Narnia." Hamel is a 21st century C.S. Lewis. Readers will be riveted to the modern characters, young heroes, and an imaginative edge that resonates for our times.

Here we have a series of books designed for young readers (and old too!) that will keep them on the edge of their seats without scaring their pants off! The Matterhorn the Brave Series is full of mystery and danger but is family friendly and great for reading aloud like I did for my kids. We loved the characters - Matthew Horn (aka Matterhorn), Aaron the Baron, Queen Bea... come on, isn't that too cool :-) And in addition to being totally unique and inspired (Four young people are recruited to keep an eye on the portals of earth that connect all space and time), Mike Hamel is gifted in the art form of leaving the reader gasping for more! The chapters are just the right length to give lots of info and adventure, but not too long that my kids would start losing their focus and then all of a sudden - BAM! He drops the perfect cliffhanger to the chapter and you just have to read on to the next chapter - sheer genius! My kids were always saying... "Just one more chapter!?!"We still have to get the rest of the series, but with such a great start, my kids are begging for more Matterhorn adventures!
