Publisher's Description

Overcome your greatest battle of all

If what we think determines who we are, then why are so many of us insecure, depressed, and confused? This is not the condition God has in mind for us. In fact, the Master’s overwhelming desire is to see us full of hope, strength, peace, joy, and love. So where do we go wrong? What is the disconnect? How do we bridge the gap and overcome all the negativity we encounter?

As Pastor Lance Hahn explains, when we lose our identity, we become unanchored, tossed about on the sea of a million random influences. Between the world, the flesh, and the devil, we don’t know what to think, and therefore our lives are filled with hurt, pain, and regret. Someone is running the show in our minds and it’s not us—at least not the real us, nor the real owner. This should come as a relief.

The Master’s Mind will show you just how much God wants to strengthen your mind and enable you to rise above the noise that seeks to overwhelm each one of us. Pastor Lance knows first-hand the power that comes from a mind at rest, trusting God’s goodness despite the voices in our head. Jesus died to set us free. He made a way for our souls to be rescued from our enemies. It’s time for us to take back control of our minds, to master them and bring them back in alignment with the Master’s will. It’s time to return to the Master’s mind.

"The Master's Mind" explores how what we think and believe shapes our behavior. "Transformation always begins in our thoughts." By studying what God teaches us to be true about ourselves and Him and aligning our thoughts to these truths, we will change our emotions and behaviors. The author quoted Scripture or provided Scriptures in the footnotes to support or illustrate his points. He stayed focused (so no filler) and clearly explained his points. Overall, I thought the author did an excellent job of explaining the battle for our minds and how to find victory.

He talked about the influences that can lead to wrong thinking and common lies that we believe. If we learn to identify lies and Satan's strategies, then we can reject them and replace them with God's truths and right thinking. Of course, this means that we need to learn God's true and good things to replace them. He talked about temptations to addictions and issues like anger, anxiety, and depression. He also explained how to resist attacks by Satan.

The author didn't spend much time on personal stories, but he did provide advice on what helps from people who struggle with depression, anxiety, and such. He suggested practical steps like regularly engaging with a supportive community (especially with those who understand your struggles and can give good advice), daily reading of the Bible to learn the truth of God and thinking about these truths, engaging with God through prayer, and avoiding the situations that usually lead to wrong thoughts or emotions. Don't expect a quick solution. It's a process of learning to make right choices, which makes it easier to make right choices in the future.

The Master's Mind: The Art of Reshaping Your Thoughts

By Lance Hahn, Published by W Publishing Group, an imprint of Thomas Nelson

We all have thoughts. Thoughts that we follow through with. And sometimes that's where the troubles start when our thoughts are not submitted to God. In this book, Hahn walks us through how to recognize that we need to strengthen our minds to rise above the noise and chaos of the world's influence. Shows us how false identity can be found in our thoughts, and how and why we believe who we are. Puts the light on the fact that Satan is a liar, steals our identity, and works his way into our minds to keep us from taking our thoughts captive unto Christ.

Through scripture and case studies, he takes us on a journey that will lead us to be aligned with the will of God. He shows us we don't have to be victims of our temptations and insecurities but can have victory. It is a very practical look at reality and moves us deeper into spiritual maturity.

It sometimes blunt honesty, he presents the difficulties that can come with the total resistance of the enemy's influence as we work toward the takeover of our own thinking as unto God.

As we are shown how to look at temptations, imaginations, rebellion and other battles that go on inside of us, we are instructed in ways to work toward the peace of being in God's will.

Through it all, we are assured we are not alone. That God is right there with us. That even as we are working, it is God in us that is leading to victory.

This isn't a quick read. You read a little, stop to mull over it, talk with God for a while, and then continue reading. Seeing the truth about ourselves is never easy, but it brings freedom from what could be our greatest battle.

In "The Master's Mind," Lance Hahn urges Christians to defend their minds from the attacks of the world, the flesh, and the Devil. Hahn highlights how our thoughts are critical in shaping how we interact with the circumstances and people that we encounter daily. The author asserts that the best way to protect our minds is to actively put off our sinful old ways and take on life-giving thoughts through Scriptural truth and God-centered thinking. Hahn then outlines strategies that believers can use to equip themselves to counter strikes. For example, the author mentions Ephesians 6 in its depiction of the combat attire that Christians need to protect themselves from Satan's attacks. Another strategy is to run away from temptation like Joseph and not allow our fleshly desires to gain a foothold. The most beneficial takeaway is the point Hahn makes on how we need to firmly grasp our new identity in Christ. Through Jesus, we can live victoriously and courageously as we have died to our old selves and are now a new creation.

Although the author's ideas are helpful and practical, I am wary of one suggestion Hahn makes in how we should think spiritual realities into actual realities (i.e. think as if you were victorious over a particular temptation). It seems to me that the author is mixing up biblical promises and gospel declarations with a psychological technique to wish things into existence. Furthermore, despite the valuable insights Hahn provides, he seems to have misplaced Scripture's emphasis on what fuels our motivations as being the mind rather than the heart. Throughout the Bible, we see that the chief issue is whether our hearts are set upon worshipping idols or on the one true God. I am not arguing that we should not be careful of what comes across our minds or that we need to train our minds to be in tune with the Holy Spirit and Scripture. However, the more pressing issue is the loyalty of our hearts as we cannot think, reason, or argue our way to holiness. We need the transforming power of the Spirit to change our hearts of stone into hearts of flesh. It is the work of the Holy Spirit and the truth of Scripture that continues to sanctify our hearts until we enter into glory. Without a heart attuned to Christ, all forms and techniques will fall short and we will experience no freedom from the barrage of attacks that Satan and our flesh assails.

I would recommend this book with caution and urge readers to consider what Scripture says about our sanctification. The author offers many valid observations and tips that are largely constructive but the main premise seems to be anchored in the wrong assumption of what steers our motivations. If we concentrate on trying to make improvements to our thinking without changing our heart's desires, we can only expect frustration and despair. Godly living does require deliberate actions and hard work but we need to first admit our inability and call to Him to rescue and restore us through Christ. It is only when we flee to Christ and submit ourselves wholly to God that we can experience true transformation and obedient hearts.

Lance Hahn reminds me a little bit of a male counterpart to Joyce Meyer, only deeper. The Master's Mind is about overcoming negativity and then replacing it with positive, peace filled thoughts. Hahn reminds us what God is like and gives us steps to take that point us in the right direction of becoming more like Him. In this book are topics such as depression, temptation, the attributes of Satan, and living with a fantastical worldview.

What is great about this book is that it is honest and full of Scripture. Everything point the author makes is backed up by the Bible itself. That's where the real power is, by the way. Hahn doesn't point to himself as the authority - he points to Christ. And I really appreciate that.

Lance Hahn has done a great job of writing a book that is both very readable and very pertinent. Reshaping your thoughts is difficult and I think Hahn is right with the key to it all: we need to become more like Jesus because He is the only one with a perfect mind and handled all things perfectly while He was on earth. I really enjoyed this book and will keep it as a reference for times when I feel as if I can't go on anymore. The encouragement is great.

Yes. Yes. Yes. We need this book. I know I did. So powerful and so true.

If you have read Joyce Meyer'sBattlefield of the Mindthen you will love this book. I so needed this book, it came into my life at the perfect time. The way Lance talks about shaping our mind to the mind of Christ just really struck me and took me deeper. This was a non-fiction book I made time to read because I need my mind reshaped.

If you struggle with your thought life in any way, if you know you aren't thinking how Christ designed you to think you must read this book. It's like taking a breath of fresh air over your thoughts.

A copy of this book was given to me. All opinions are my own.
