Product Description

Doesn't every mother have a box filled with treasured mementos and trinkets? If sweet memories aren't hidden in a closet or an attic, perhaps they are tucked away in a corner of her heart. But Mary's treasure box is unlike any other. She has filled it with bits of straw from a manger, a little gold from the Magi, and other dear reminders of one silent night in a Bethlehem stable. Now, decades later, Mary opens her treasure box once again and shares her most cherished memories with her granddaughter, Hannah. Join them as they revisit the simple splendor of the Nativity story. Recommended for ages 4 to 8 years.

Author/Artist Review

Author: C. E. Walz

Tell us a little about yourself.  I am an educator, author, composer/musician, mother, wife, and Christian.

What was your motivation behind this project?  After putting away Christmas decorations one December, I began to look through some other boxes in the basement. I came across one that had mementos from my son's birth and infancy: a little hat, a blanket, a pacifier, the ID bracelet from the hospital. Earlier that day, I had read the Bible verse from Luke 2:19: "And Mary treasured these things and pondered them in her heart." That evening it suddenly came to me: was Mary a sentimental mother like I was? I had a "treasure" box. What if Mary had one? The story practically wrote itself!

What do you hope folks will gain from this project?  This story is written for children, and the beautiful, simple illustrations of Bruno Merz reflect that child-like quality. However, this book is also for mothers...and grandmothers, too. I hope that folks will see and feel the humanity, the "motherhood" of Mary and that mothers and grandmothers, as well as their daughters and sons will make that special connection with her.

How were you personally impacted by working on this project?  I became distinctly aware of the inspiration that came to me so suddenly when I thought about Mary and her "treasure box." Writing this book made me more aware of the little things that my own mother and grandmothers had saved to remind them of my birth and childhood, and I realized that this may be a universal motherly trait.

Who are your influences, sources of inspiration or favorite authors / artists?  Bruno Merz is now one of my favorite artists! I had seen his work with one of Max Lucado's latest books, and I was thrilled when my editor suggested we take a look at his work.
