ACS Book FinderAge: 45-54Gender: female4 Stars Out Of 5Children's small reference book on MarySeptember 2, 2014ACS Book FinderAge: 45-54Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5Having just reviewed "Paul" in the Getting to Know series, I was looking forward to seeing how the author, Nancy Sanders, brought Mary to life beyond the typical Sunday School literature and handouts. At $7 each, these little books pack a lot of information. Frankly, they are mini-commentaries wrapped in children's storybook format. As the child reads each chapter, they are presented with factoids and indepth information that is still within range for the age intended - 6-10 year olds.
This is not a "cutesie" storybook. It is indeed a reference book designed the young child in mind. It can entertain, but I do not see this as entertainment material. I see this being used during family Bible study time or in the home school setting. There is a virtual plethora of information packed in this book.
The author takes the time period customs and history along with Scripture to flesh out Mary's life. I like that the simple life of a woman in the Bible, though beloved of God and chosen by God to be mother of Jesus, is told for that alone - a Jewish woman in Bible times chosen to be Jesus' mother and the wife of Joseph.

This is the third book I have reviewed in this series, and I have loved each one of them! These books are great, full color biographies and so much more! Through artwork, color photographs, maps we learn about what life was like in Nazareth during Mary's time. We learn about how people shopped, what types of homes they lived in, how they took care of the sick, how they bathed, got engaged, their faith, holy days, and much more. It also talks about Mary, how the angel came to her, her visit with Elizabeth, marriage to Joseph, birth of Jesus, and the other occasions Mary is mentioned in the Bible to her being near the cross and Jesus choosing John to take care of his mother. The book ends with Jesus' resurrection, ascension, and the day of Pentecost. In addition to all of the details in the text and the color photos, maps, and timelines, children will learn so much through the definitions, eyewitness accounts, Bible heroes, and Did You Know sections.
I think this is a great series and look forward to adding others to our book shelf!

BethRAge: 35-44Gender: female4 Stars Out Of 5Great Resource for Students of Biblical StudyJuly 21, 2014BethRAge: 35-44Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 4Making connections to the Word of God is important. It is important for adults and it is important for children. I always feel more connected to passages of scripture that I am reading if I know more intimate and historical details about the passage. Get to Know Mary by Nancy I Sanders is a wonderful tool to help your student connect to the Word of God. It will make the passages about Mary and Jesus and the time period surrounding come alive.
Get to Know Mary is a small, pocket-sized reference book, containing a wealth of information surrounding the life and times of Mary, the mother of Jesus. Inside, you will find information about the places Mary lived, the culture, worship, where they lived, food they ate, and scriptural passages that included Mary in the story. There are also maps, artwork, and photographs representative of the time in which Mary lived.
There were a few things that were distracting from the text. There is lots of additional information on some of the pages besides the text, which made it seem too busy. On page 29, there was information about Mary's journey to visit and Elizabeth and back home to Nazareth. The map on the opposite page does not include Nazareth. Also, some of the information had to be filtered through to find facts just about Mary. It seemed to be a book more about the life and times of Mary, than just Mary herself.
I enjoy doing research about Biblical times. This was a very nice book to include in a child's research library, and could be helpful for teens and adults as well. Overall, I enjoyed this book and am glad that I chose it as one for review. I enjoyed looking at the artwork depicting Biblical people and events, as well as the photographs of the artifacts and historical sites in Israel. My favorite part was learning about Mary and Joseph's home.
I recommend this book to anyone wanting to learn more about the life of Mary, the mother of Jesus, whether you are someone who enjoys doing Biblical research or a homeschool student. This is a wonderful book to include in your library. The author has done a lot of research which will benefit you in your Bible study. She ends the novel with the resurrection of Christ and how Mary's story is completed in Jesus, as all our stories are, when we trust in Him.
Many blessings to you as you discover the wonderful truths of God's Word!

Mary, Jesus' mother had a very important job to do. Her life was truly meant to glorify God in every way. She was specially chosen to carry, deliver, and raise Jesus a man that was chosen to deliver us. His death on the cross meant so much to every one of our lives and some how, some way, whether we believe or not, His life&death touch us all. Mary(Get To Know), is full of interesting facts about this remarkable woman. You learn all about how she was raised and how she chose to raise her children. She was a very good example to us all on how to be obedient to God and how we are to put that first in our lives.
She taught her children to be that way. Knowing what she knew about the Lord's death and resurrection--I'm sure it wasn't easy for her each day, but she trusted God to the utmost. But because of her obedience and how she learned to stay at out of God's way, generations will benefit from that. She was a great woman of God and the best example of the Proverbs 31 woman that the Bible speaks about. This book is a great biography to teach our 6-10 year olds all about her and it is full of information as well as timelines, maps, and facts to gain further knowledge.
