I'm always willing to read books regarding marriage and parenting that could potentially help me to become a better wife and mother. I also have read several books by Chip Ingram and have been thoroughly impressed every time.
One of the first things I noticed about the book and absolutely loved is that it transcends all married couples ages, length of marriage, etc. Ingram includes a significant amount of references to parenting as well. I personally loved this but marriages that do not necessarily expect to have children will be reading a lot of content that doesn't pertain to them. Those that anticipate children down the road will still benefit greatly from the parenting wisdom provided.
I also loved how much Scripture Ingram used throughout book. My belief is that the more scripture presented, the better. Obviously it needs to be presented through a lens of truth and context. But as a believer, Scripture is my first go to for wisdom, not another person's opinions or thoughts. He did a great job of including Scripture references for every concept discussed.
I also enjoyed that each chapter concludes with a series of questions to help the reader dive deeper into their personal marriage relationship. This also allows the book to be utilized in a group setting. Ingram is not shy about sharing stories and events from his own marriage that reflect wrongs, rights, progresses, etc. This made the book itself more relatable and applicable to my own life knowing that no marriage is perfect and every marriage requires work and effort.
My favorite chapters included:
- The Evolution of the American Man
- The Evolution of the American Woman
Both chapters spent a great deal of time detailing out the transition of roles men and women have played from biblical times to now. It's fascinating and disappointing to see the changes and developments in gender roles within marriage.
Ingram includes one appendix: A Wife's Choice: To Build or to Tear Down. It's a short section that refers back to the submission concept and reviews the choices and actions of Abigail vs. Sapphira.
I received a copy of this book from Baker Books in exchange for an honest review.
Academy2525 Stars Out Of 5Fantastic marriage resource for all agesApril 15, 2019Academy252Quality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5Are you looking for a Biblical approach to marriage? Marriage that Works is beautifully written for both husbands and wives to share. It is full of scripture and truth for a world that is sorely lacking in both on this topic. Ingram shares his own experiences throughout the book. He shares struggles from early marriage and how they have worked through those early years of marriage to shape how they live now.
This is a book you should read if you are thinking about getting married, are newly married or have been married for any length of time but want more insight. It holds truth for all of us! You can read this book on your own but I recommend you read it with your spouse/fiance and have discussions about each chapter as you go. There are questions at the end of each chapter to guide you in discussion.
There are some chapters that specifically address men and some that specifically address women. There are a few hot button topics along the way but they need to be addresses and understood in light of scripture. I love that Chip shares what our historical roles have been and what God's word says they should be. Yes, the word SUBMISSION shows up but Chip shows us where we have gotten it wrong on both extremes and why we need to take another look from God's perspective.
Missy4 Stars Out Of 5Simple InstructionsFebruary 12, 2019MissyQuality: 5Value: 4Meets Expectations: 4I enjoyed reading Chip's book "Marriage that Works." It is simple, straightforward and is rooted in Biblical truth. I'm giving it 4 stars because I've read a number of books on marriage and some of it seemed repetitive to me, but that is my own bias. I would say it is worth reading for any married couple, whether newly married or married 30+ years. It certainly has something to offer everyone!
danniAge: 25-34Gender: female4 Stars Out Of 5Great help for marriagesFebruary 5, 2019danniAge: 25-34Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 4Meets Expectations: 4I have read some of Chip Ingram's other books and they have been well-written. So I thought another marriage book wouldn't hurt to read.
The book includes thirteen chapters and decently sized at 250 pages. The following are a few of the chapter titles:
- God's Design for Marriage
- The Evolution of the American Man
- Is there a Woman in the House?
- Stepping up as a Man
- Stepping up as a Woman
Ingram does a wonderful job of incorporating Scripture and detailing the biblical stance on manhood, womanhood, and marriage. He does not sugar-coat God's intentions for men, women and marriage. He also does a great job of including his own personal experiences and interactions with other couples.
Each chapter concludes with a Questions For Reflection and Discussion section. These seemed to be extremely beneficial for a couple to complete together in order to dig deeper into the chapter's concept and find practical steps to take in their own marriage.
Throughout the book he also advises many tools and resources to supplement the suggested practical steps.
My favorite sections included The Evolution of the American Man and The Evolution of the American Woman. It was fascinating to see the transition of the roles of men and women from biblical times to now. The change is drastic and devastating to marriages.

wheelsmsChicopee, MAAge: 55-65Gender: male4 Stars Out Of 5God's blueprint for a strong marriageFebruary 1, 2019wheelsmsChicopee, MAAge: 55-65Gender: maleQuality: 4Value: 4Meets Expectations: 4There are countless books and advice about marriage. Some are thoughtful, some are good advice, and some are pure fluff. Very few are based on the blueprint of the One who created marriage in the first place.
In his latest book, pastor and author Chip Ingram goes back to the Scriptures to unpack what marriage really is, why God created marriage, and the unique roles both a man and a woman play in their marriage.
The first half of the book is based on Ephesians 5:22-33. It explains what the Bible says about the roles of a husband and wife in marriage. The author also shows how our understanding of those roles has changed over the past 50 years. After laying the foundation, Chip spends the second half of the book explaining what a man is to do in marriage and what a woman is to do in marriage. He gives a number of practical ideas on how each partner is to fulfill their unique role and responsibility. Chip also explains that marriage is a lifetime commitment to a covenant rather than a contract that can be broken when we feel like it.
The author provides a candid look at his own marriage. He is honest about what he and his wife did right, where they failed, and how they learned from their mistakes to build a strong marriage.
