Product Description

Candice Curry didn't have a normal childhood. Normal is hard to come by when you are awakened in the night by your father--who is high on drugs--for a wild ride down the highway. Or when your father has a habit of "borrowing" things and never returning them. Or when imposing strangers show up at the door trying to track him down.

While her father found himself on the wrong side of the law, her mother put herself through nursing school and kept food on the table by working around the clock, which left Candice in the hands of a father who needed babysitting himself.

Through her struggles and brokenness, Candice finds freedom in forgiveness and love in the midst of tragedy. Join her on the winding road to discover the truth that God doesn't love us because we're perfect--but because he is.

Publisher's Description

When Candice Curry was a little girl, she put her hand in her father's back pocket so that she wouldn't get lost in large crowds. Little did she know that as she followed him, he was plying his trade: conning people. Her family drove stolen cars, lived in stolen houses, and shopped with stolen credit cards. Drug use was regular, as were visits from strange people who were trying to track her father down. Though she eventually cut ties with her father, Candice could not ignore the scars that were left from her childhood.

This is her story, one steeped in secrets but one that, ultimately, led her to a place of forgiveness and freedom. As she struggles to understand her criminal father, as well as her own imperfect life, Candice comes to realize that we are not defined by our circumstances but rather by how we react to those circumstances. She's found peace in the knowledge that God doesn't love us because we're perfect--but because he is.

Author Bio

Candice Curry spent years working in sales doing what she felt she had to instead of what she wanted to. Then she put her faith in God and gave it all up to share her story through writing. The daughter of a con man and convicted criminal, Candice started a blog as a form of therapy, which has grown into a worldwide ministry and landed her on TODAY and Good Morning America. A speaker and a contributor to The Huffington Post, Today.com, and several other sites, Candice has a passion to give hope to those suffering the pain of rejection, the burden of unforgiveness, and the emptiness of great loss. Candice and her husband, Brandon, have five children and recently welcomed her sixteen-year-old sister into their home. They live in San Antonio, Texas, in the former home of her childhood best friend.

This is an incredible story! I made the mistake of reading the last several chapters in public and couldn't stop the tears from flowing, so I was the oddball crying in the waiting room!

I started following Candice's blog when her letter to her daughter's stepmother went viral. As a stepmother myself, I was so impressed with Candice's grace and became a fan right away. I am an even bigger fan of hers after reading this amazing book!

I am in AWE of Candice's ability to forgive and move forward with her life after her "atypical" childhood. This is an amazing testimony of the power of God's love and His ability to redeem even the messiest story. I was so touched by the transformation in her marriage, as well as the sweet man who stepped in as a grandfather figure to her oldest daughter.

I am so thankful that Candice shared her story because I know it will impact so many lives. (Have your tissues ready before you start reading!)

I received an advance reader copy in exchange for my honest review.

The Con Man's Daughter: A Story of Lies, Desperation, and Finding God by Candice Curry is a sad family's true story. Candice Curry's father is like a child himself. In his daughter's eyes, he is very, very selfish. She spends most of her life striving to conquer the bad memories of her childhood. Once she grows up she takes on the battle of her step siblings. She wants to make sure that her father does not hurt another child in this life. As she struggles through many battles in life, she learns to walk in faith. God becomes the pilot of her life, her "Blessed Assurance" and her friend.

I felt moved emotionally after reading how all, a big family, had left him totally alone. Obviously, he needed many prayers and a basket full of hope. Through all of these feelings, prayers, questions, Candice Curry became a wonderful mother and did not miss mentioning the miracles which took place in her life over and over again. I hope you have continued success and many blessings throughout your life. Thank you to Baker Books for a copy of the book.

Candice Curry has an incredible gift of sharing her story with grace, authenticity, and humbleness. I could not put this book down, and when I did, I could not stop thinking about what could possibly happen next. Her life and her story got into my head, but even more so, got into my heart. There were parts of her story that broke my heart and I found myself weeping for her loss. But God. As strong as the pain is in these chapters, redemption runs stronger. In her story she has given us a view of her own transformation, from bitterness to forgiveness. If God can help her to forgive the deepest, darkest wounds of her soul, then surely, He can help any of us walk through forgiveness and experience what she has penned in these pages.... freedom. Share your story and set others free.

You won't want to put this book down and when you finish, you'll want to read it again!

You will ask yourself, how can anyone survive this type of childhood! The lies, deceit, abandonment, selfishness and manipulation of this "father" towards his family are appalling but Candace desperately seeks his love for most of her formative years. On the outside, Candace is a happy, bubbly high school cheerleader and others must have thought she had it all but the painful secrets she kept close tell a different story. She finally finds the love of her Father in Heaven and is able to put the pieces together. A very heartfelt book that is a must read on so many levels! (less)

This is a book that is brutal, it is honest, and it is beautiful! My heart wept and broke for the little girl that wanted nothing more in life than the love and acceptance of her father. Then, my heart swelled to the point of bursting when this same little girl realized her value and her worth was with our Heavenly Father, who loved her like no other. Through her brutal and beautiful honesty, Candice Curry bravely shares her story, a story of redemption. A story we all share.
