Mamas Song is a portrait of life in the tiny rural community of Elgood, West Virginia, in the early 1900s. It centers around the Higginbothams, a close-knit farming family, and particularly on Maude, their youngest daughter. It chronicles how their lives are shaped by historical events, their own personal choices, and the trials they face in an era before modern conveniences and modern medicine.
They are just an ordinary family--none of them pursue or gain worldly fame. Even so, their unassuming lives are powerful examples of faith, perseverance, and sacrificial love, and the impact that simple acts of kindness have on the lives of others.
Their journey through life teaches them that love, loss, and grief are intertwined and will always be so, this side of heaven.

Tell us a little about yourself. I have always loved the country and animals, and I have two degrees in animal science. I am now retired and live on a farm with my husband, dog, and "retired" horse. I am now able to pursue my writing and painting projects.
What was your motivation behind this project? My mother's battle with dementia. She was losing a lifetime of memories, and I realized that one day they would all be gone if I did not capture them. Also, I was very close to my mother, and the project was also therapy for me.
What do you hope folks will gain from this project? I want them to get a picture of a family that went through much tragedy, but survived by relying on their love for each other, and their faith in God.
How were you personally impacted by working on this project? Mama's Song is about my grandmother. She grew up in the early 1900s, and I wanted to connect what I knew of her personal story to historical events. I spent a lot of time researching this rich period of history and grew to appreciate how difficult life could be then.
Who are your influences, sources of inspiration or favorite authors / artists? My mother was and still is my greatest source of inspiration, and her loss left a void that cannot be filled, but my faith gives me hope that I will see her again.
Anything else you'd like readers / listeners to know: Mama's Song is set in the Appalachian mountains and is a positive book about this area. Many people have told me that the story is also their family's story, and it brought back many memories, some happy, some sad. But my greatest satisfaction comes from those who said they were sorry to see the story end.
