Making Math Meaningful is a hands-on, Charlotte Mason-based math program that works to elevate a child's conceptual reasoning. Students use math manipulatives to not only learn how to add, subtract, multiply, and divide, but also how, why, and when to apply each skill.
Written specifically for homeschoolers, Making Math Meaningful doesn't require additional training, but rather simply guides the parent to introduce each concept using simple conversations (The "What I Am To Do" and "What I Am To Say" sections). Rather than teaching kids to memorize math facts and formulas, students will progress from utilizing concrete objects, to pictorial representations, to symbolic/numeric representations in word-problem format. This approach helps them apply their knowledge to everyday life and understand the problems they're being asked to solve. Each concept is first introduced with manipulatives and students are given time to work with them in order to figure out solutions for themselves - teaching themselves how to think mathematically in the process.
Ideal for all learning styles, the manipulative activities are ideal for kinesthetic learners, the conversations are perfect for auditory learners, and the pictures work well for the visual learners.
This Grade 1 curriculum is comprised of a Parent Guide and a Student Workbook, with a written parent teaching script. If you don't already have it, you'll need the Making Math Meaningful Manipulatives Kit which can be used for Levels K-4 (sold-separately). The Parent Guide provides scripted sections for teaching the concepts and skills in a conversational and interactive format. The Student Book provides your children to opportunity to practice and apply what you taught during the conversation.
