Tell us a little about yourself. I am a Christian Clinical Psychologist and minister in professional practice since 1977. I specialize in the application of Biblical truth and relationship principles to the pain and problems of everyday life. Currently I serve as the Director of Counseling Services at Focus on the Family. My wife Linda and I have four sons.
What was your motivation behind this project? After working with thousands of hurting couples over the years, I wanted to offer them a fresh and comprehensive resource to help them make their mediocre, mundane and/or miserable marriages become magnificent!
What do you hope folks will gain from this project? No marriage is perfect. In fact, the research on marital satisfaction proves that marriage is the hardest and most challenging of all human interpersonal relationships. Therefore, I wanted equip couples with an effective set of practical tools they can use to work on their marriage.
How were you personally impacted by working on this project? It has been said that the teacher learns the most! Certainly the challenges of becoming a better man, husband and father were given to me in abundance from the research and work I invested in creating the book!
Who are your influences, sources of inspiration or favorite authors / artists? My friends, doctoral program classmates and book endorsers, Henry Cloud, John Townsend and Greg Smalley; Mike Mason; Emerson Eggerich; David and Claudia Arp; Les and Leslie Parrott; and Kevin Leman, among others.
Anything else you'd like readers / listeners to know: What sets this book apart from many other good Christian books on marriage are several practical tools couples can use to customize and apply the material to their own marriage: an innovative, free on-line clinical assessment of their own relationship (which corresponds to each chapter in the book), and at the end of every chaper some unique tools couples can use to personally apply the material to their own marriage, including: 5 scriptures relevant to each chapter topic, 5 discussion questions, 3 activities, and 5 other Christian marriage books on each of the 12 topics in the book for further study. A companion workbook, "A Marriage Maintenance Manual" is to be released later this year.
